What do you all think the priorities will be in next years class?

Here's what I think:

1. DL: Heavy focus on DT...but we need DE's as well (6-7 spots)

2. OL: Even with a decent class this year...which could be bolstered by a late signing...we need quality bodies for both 1st and 2nd string (4-5 spots)

3. QB: With Stephens being a senior and Lamaison being obsolete (whether he transfers or not) we need a blue chipper here (1-2 spots)

4. TE: Stocker's a senior...Rivera and Adderly look to be serviceable at best...we need some playmakers here (1-2 spots)

5. LB: We need to upgrade this position...our starters could be really good but we might be hurting for quality depth soon (2-4 spots)

6. Playmakers at WR/RB/DB: This one could be higher on the list...you can never have to many of these guys...but we have done well lately with this need so I'm putting it further down the list...it's hard to put a number on how many we need...I'll just say as many as we have room for (6-7 spots)

7. Punter: Palardy was a HUGE pickup...it'd be nice to see the equivalnet happen this year at the punter position (1 spot)

Anyone have an early idea of how many we can take next year?

If you take the max of each spot I've listed it comes out to 28 so that's what I'm going with

I don't know, it's like you've got to be a rocket scientist to figure out how many spots. I think next year we need to find a couple of solid TE's along with Linemen. I think we've go the money positions covered long enough to get some uglies next year.

Big names on the D and O Line are a huge priority. Unless Nash and Bray both turn out to be busts (not going to happen) QB is less of a need than some major LBs and DBs. Two TEs one RB. Right now, we have two slots we can back count to so our numbers look a lot like this year. Sign 30, enroll 27, with 3 sign and places...

DT without a doubt. I would like to see us finally get out of this cycle where we are always terribly short in one position. Like to see them balance things out eventually. Seems like then we could just go after the top talent at each spot every year.

if nothing changes we will have two spots to back count so we could enroll 27 next year

UT hasn't had a class with quantity and quality DT's or OL's in several years. I think UT has some quality guys... just not enough.

The last time UT had a "good" OL class was probably 2003.

UT has to be effective in finding JUCO guys IMO and/or guys who really can contribute as Fr... and those are few and far between.

OTOH, Pair, Fulton, James, and Stone are an excellent foundation.

I didn't know it was this bad... in the 3 classes prior to this one, UT signed a total of 8 (9 if you count Brimfield who was converted from DL) OL's- one 2*, five 3*, two 4*... Kiffin ran off Bailey and Sawtelle.

I think DT is by far the most pressing need...After losing Dan Williams and Wes Brown this year, the position will be shoddy this coming season...A name I would keep an eye on is 2011 TN recruit - OL/DT Antonio Richardson...I think some are regarding him as a LT b/c of his size 6'5'' 305 lbs...But I saw this guy play as a freshman at nose tackle and was an absolute beast...And I think he prefers defense to offense so this could be another in state talent that we need to lock up!! Rumored to already being favored by Bama...Could we say the next Big John Henderson or the next Big Al Haynesworth???

No chance we need a quality blue chipper at QB. I think between Nance and Bray, we have a long term winner.

As said on other strings, Herbie on ESPN said Bray could be the biggest surprise of the class.

TE - 2
WR - 2
OL - 4
DE - 2
DT - 4

Not bad...if I had to put exact numbers on it (which I didn't in the original post) I'd say this:

QB - 2
RB - 2
TE - 2
WR - 2
OL - 5
DE - 3
DT - 4
LB - 4
DB - 3
P/K - 1

28 signees...I don't think we have the luxury of not taking the maximum number of signees we can at this point

I like it! If we can bring Chuck Smith into the fold as the DL coach in the next few days, it will pay dividends in recruiting DL prospects for the next class. Plus, I'd say that he'd be one helluva good coach!

I agree that Bray or Nance look like they could be excellent (especially Bray) but that is still only 3 QB's on the 2011 roster...what if a rash of injuries occurs?

And I think taking a blue chipper every year at QB creates competition in practice which if nothing else will make the other QB's better

Do you want another situation like last year down the road? We need to take a QB in each class.

I think we do want to sign a full 25, and maybe 27-30 (30 would be the max I suppose, but as a disclaimer this stuff does seem to be overly complicated so if I am wrong, my bad.)

I agree with what people are putting down in this thread. I think WR is a spot that we only really want to sign 1 or 2 guys at. Obviously DL and OL are still areas of concern, and TE is a need too. We seem to have been doing a good job of bring in fresh DB's the last couple of years, and need to continue doing that.

I think we want to only sign one QB assuming the coaches like what they see out of Bray, and to a lesser extent Nance and the rest. But we want to sign a high quality one. If that doesn't seem to be in the cards, then maybe go after a couple of projects or under-rated guys.

It's always good to sign a running back.

And of course, we have to try and build up our Linebacker group.

In summary, we need great players at every position.

QB: 1, maybe 2
WR: 1 or 2
TE: 2
OL: 4 or 5
RB: 1
FB: 0

LB: 3
CB: 2
DE: 2
DT: 4
S: 2

That adds up to 25.

The #1 and 1a priority for next year will be big nasty offensive and defensive lineman.....Game are won in the trenches on both sides. We have GREAT skill position players but we are going to need those.

Also we need some big time DB's and LB's...Jackson will probably either get in trouble or go pro after 2011 so he will be a big fill....

i would say we put DB's up a little more but other than that i think this is pretty spot on. maybe a few more LB's. i think with our online coach we hired he is going to attract ALOT of big time OL prospects...we need to build this team from the inside out. all these playmakers we signed this year are going to be able to do diddly if our QB is on his back every play

Spread it out, with a little catch up on the lines.

1 QB
1 RB
3 WR
2 TE
6 OL

3 DE
4 DT
4 LB
4 DB

2 of the DT should be JUCO, no matter how many freshman we take. It may need to be this way for a couple years, since the last 3 classes have been low.

Then 2012 should be back to normal.

yes and dtackle is just as bad. We got one in each of the last three classes. One. This is why I fing it so hilarious to see these predictions of how many games we will win this year. We are thin and bad on both lines yet goober after goober gets on here and says "we'll I'll be mad if we don't win eight games!".

We should have no less than fifteen oline and no less than seven dtackles. We need a boat load of both.

How many you can sign depends on how many leave. How many seniors next year plus attrition. Don't forget the 85 scholarship limit. If we are at 81 right now. We can sign four plus however many seniors graduate. I bet that is a lower number than the 25 a year limit...

I think our 2011 class should be something like this
2 qbs (one dual threat one pro style)
2 recievers
2 tightends
6 offensive lineman
3 defensive tackles
4 linebackers
4 defensive backs
3 athletes
