Just left the game. The raw talent level is through the roof. Once they understand the system t they will be special.

I agree. I don't think people realize how good Selden and Embiid are. They've been completely overshadowed by Wiggins. How does Landen Lucas look?

I was pleasantly surprised with Lucas. He is a big strong kid. Embid though, needs to toughen up quick.

Would love to hear a report on Wiggins if he played. :hi:

I'm sure you know UT has a potential matchup with them in the Caribbean.

Wiggins took a while to loosen up (basically the entire first half). He was very comfortable the second half, very smooth to the rim, almost jumped through the roof on an alley-oop, and has great body control in the air.

However, he could not guard anyone tonight. He needs to learn how to position himself on defense...and, again, he needs to learn quickly.

Kansas is poised for a fantastic season, no doubt. I think the vets they have put them slightly above UK right now, but we'll see how good UK will be at the end of the season.

Well, they are poised for a fantastic March, if they can get the raw talent to understand and execute Self's system.

They do have some veterans, and, in fact, I would not be surprised if they are starting only one freshman for the Duke game. Andrew White III's improvement was absolutely unexpected. He is quicker, bigger, and a better shot than I even thought he could potentially be last year. Seldon looked lost on the court last night, and if he still looks lost against Fort Hay's State (their final exhibition game) and ULM (first game), then I cannot see Self starting him against Duke.

Also, in news that was announced post game, Tharpe will serve a one-game suspension for playing in some basketball tournament in Chicago this summer. So, Frank Mason will be handling the ball and the offense against ULM. That game could now be quite iffy, and I would not be surprised to see KU enter conference play with four or five losses (ULM, Duke, Wake, Florida, GTOWN, and this list does not include the other teams, aside from Wake, KU will face in Atlantis).

However, if this team can get it together by mid-January, even if they have seven losses at that point, they will be scary and special in March.

One final note: be prepared to be extremely frustrated by the insufferable officiating this season. The rule change appears, at least from last night, to be worse than even expected. First time I've seen a home crowd boo a foul called on the opposing team in a situation that really did not negatively affect the home team. Fifty fouls were called last night. Sixty-one free throws were shot. The game lasted over two and a half hours. I might go ahead and put money on Syracuse winning the National Championship this season, since they might be the only team which will not have to change their style of defense in response to the rule changes.

Tharpe suspended 1 game. Curious what the rule says about playing in summer games. How is that a NCAA violation? I didn't think it really mattered in the summer.

Sounds like BS. Fortunately, it was self-reported. And, Tharpe looks very, very good this year.

Better than UK that's for sure.

Right now, yes. It's way to early to compare Last night's game vs Transy showed UK has a lot of growing to do quickly.

Nice summary. I really believe KU will be dangerous this year. Everyone has their eyes on UK right now and there are plenty of scary teams that can go punch for punch with them. KU is one of the teams I will hoping to avoid in March.

Kansas is going to get up and down the court this year. I hope Self will let Wiggins and Selden just get after it. In the past Self had made guys slow down to much and didn't always showcase their abilities, Wayne Simion comes to mind. I believe he actually has a true point guard (Mason) for the first time in a while. If he can get him going to feed Wiggins and Selden, this is going to be a fun team to watch.

I watched UK's exhibition game since I live in Kentucky and from what I seen Johnson, Randle, and Young will probably be your best players. Willis also surprised me a bit too. You're right though, it's way too early to see what any team is going to be like this year.

Kansas will be very good. Mich State up there with them. And the Cats.

Jayhawks suffered their first loss of the season last night. While early and consistent foul trouble didn't help, Nova's gameplan against this team was perfect: attack on offense, clog the lane on defense. KU does not have outside shooting, and their freshman are not, for the most part, tough enough to drive hard inside. Further, KU still has trouble running the offense and swinging the ball (which have hitherto been hallmarks of Bill Self teams).

On the plus side, Mason again showed grit and carried KU down the stretch; Embiid, while he was in the game, was phenomenal; and, Landon Lucas showed why KU fans ought to be excited about the future. Oh, and, as bad as KU played, they were leading the game with under a minute left, and, if not for an amazing contested three (contested by Perry Ellis, by the way), KU walks off that court with a victory (hell, probably walks off the court with a victory if they don't go down to the other end and throw up a lousy three when they are down by two with twenty seconds remaining on the clock.

I hope losses like this will force Wiggins to start attacking more, as he was passive for most of the game, even though the few times he did attack, against double teams and into triple teams, he made some phenomenal moves and had good looks at the basket while releasing the ball (some he barely missed).

I would also like to see Self adjust his offense to Wiggins, and allow Wiggins to operate more in space. A simple imbalance on one side of the floor, with the big men above the stripe, and Wiggins on the far wing would at least make defenses adjust, which might create more opportunities for others (and, if the defense does not adjust, I take Wiggins in such matchups all day, every day).
