The 2014 Miss St team opened the initial CFP rankings as a surprise undefeated record and #1 ranking. They were led by a stud QB, Dak Prescott. Many MSU fans were hoping "they had arrived", but they finished the year with 3 straight losses. So far, that MSU team is the only team to open #1 in the CFP rankings and miss the playoffs. MSU has not sniffed the playoffs since because they have never found another QB of Prescott's quality.

Can the Vols replace Hooker and avoid repeating Miss St's mediocrity? Are you worried about if the Vols are really "back", or is this just a fluke season when Alabama is actually 3 plays away from having 5 losses?

So dramatic.

Overthinking it won’t change whatever is going to happen. I, for one, have enjoyed this year and believe Heupel has us in the right direction. Since I don’t even know what “back” means that’s good enough for me.

I'm more worried about dumb posters who joined in the last few weeks posting dumb topics.

Ok Newbs. If you are going to write in that style, we need to understand your background. Is your degree in English?

I remember that yr @ Ms State as the fans were in a frenzy until it all went south. Hopefully TN takes care of business Saturday but it wouldn’t surprise me if we come out flat and struggle only to see Vandy keep it close or pull the upset. I would have lost my house two days ago if someone said USCjr would hang 63 and dominate TN as that was a tilts shock.

Other similar (not exact) situations when TN started off strong and then struggled:

1992 - we were number three in the country and then dropped three in a row which led to Johnny Majors’ firing.

2001- lost to a less talented LSU team in SEC title game. We were one half away from the national
Title game Vs Miami in the Rose Bowl

2016- Beat FL and GA. Top 10 and lost to a good A&M team. TN lost to Bama, USCjr and Vandy, which cost us a trip to Sugar Bowl.

This isn’t doom and gloom but I don’t have the best feeling for this game.

Win by one point and I will be happy.

I am not sure why the OP is getting so much heat because the comparison looks valid.

However, I think we are not in the same situation as Miss State lost its coach, players, etc. shortly after and weren't able to follow-up.

Tennessee is recruiting well and hopefully our staff doesn't go anywhere. We probably need to shake things up on defense.

I am expecting an 8-4 kind of season next year but we could be back in 2024.

Agree. Since our defeat Saturday, I've seen many posters on here that I normally don't see. Makes you wonder if they're really trolls, or Vol fans that simply love being miserable and want others to be miserable as well.

If your asking us if we’re just a flash in the pan type team, I don’t think that’s the case. I truly believe we have staying power this time around. Nico is the future and I think he will be as good as HH was for us. Have to remember Heupel achieved all this with a limited roster. This recruiting class will be top 10 coming in.

Every Monday, some new blood joins from the upcoming opponent and pretends to be a wolf in sheep clothing.

MSU had Cousin Eddie. If he wasn't going to win anything with Dak, no chance he will ever do anything w/o him.

The pooper was full.

On the other hand, CJH has Rico Suave as an incoming QB.

I agree with most of these thoughts. The roster is still depleted. I think TN the right coach that can keep us on top, but I think this year is a flash in the pan type team. No one expected this so soon. I think the team will regress next year, maybe the next couple of years.

Valid question that no one has the answer for. But, I think is different w/ JH. Losing HH, but his offense has been legit everywhere he's been...and have good QB stable for future. D concerns me the most. That being said, there's a chance we're like BB Vols when Grant and Admiral had great leadership/impact and there was a little fall back the next year, but still elevated from where we were, keeping to a higher level of competition. I think this is where we'll be next year...8-4 floor (worse if we don't solve D issues) w/ likely 9-3ish year

I think it’s fair to point that we may take a small step back next year due to losing the leaders from this current team. The reason programs like Alabama, Ohio state, and UGA can keep winning year after year is due to the roster/depth they’ve built throughout the years from recruiting. They didn’t have a mass exodus of players like we did with the coaching change.

Bama is 2 plays away from being undefeated.
