With the SEC Network now in the fold with 3 timeslots, that changes the TV priority selections a bit. In previous years it was this order:

1. CBS (3:30)
2. ESPN (7:45)
3. ESPN 2 (7:00)
4. SEC Network (12:20)
5. ESPNU and others as needed

I haven't been able to find anything for the 2014 selection process, since the new SEC Network has been added. My assumption is that it will look something like this:

1. CBS (3:30)
2. ESPN (7:00)
3. SEC Network (7:00)
4. ESPN2 (6:00)
5. SEC Network (3:30)
6. SEC Network 12:00)
7. ESPNU and overflow if necessary

If anybody has any info on what the priority selection process will look like, please share!

I was actually wondering about this yesterday. I haven't seen anything official yet, but obviously #1 and #2 won't change. The pecking order after that will be interesting adn I'm especially curous to see where ESPN2 falls. It seems The Deuce would still have a larger reach at this point than the SEC Network, but maybe not.

I thought I read that the 3rd slot would alternate between ESPN2 and SECN. Which makes sense since it could help ratings across the mothership's family of networks.

I haven't found anything yet. I would figure with mussberger being the new sec network primetime play by play announcer that it would have pretty high priority.

Bump. So ESPN and abc got to pick first for week 1. Has the process changed?

CBS's contract with the SEC was written back when that network still owned the tv rights to the US Open, which the network aired for 46 years.

Under that contract, CBS was given the right of first selection of SEC games but due to wanting to air the US Open, this wouldn't start for them until the 3rd week of the season (when the Open traditionally ended). So those first weeks, the ESPN networks (& SEC Network) were really the only ones with any sort of selection priority for SEC games, as CBS's contract didn't have anything regarding such (and really with the rights to show the US Open, they were fine with that).

ESPN bought the US Open rights two or so years ago (seemingly they have chosen to dedicate ESPN2 to its broadcast during the tournament). Since that kind of left CBS in a bit of a predicament, the result the last year (the first year of the new ESPN/ US Open contract) was that CBS bought the airing rights to an SEC game later in the selection order from ESPN during those first two weekends of the season.

I think they ended up buying something along the lines of the second or third game in the SEC's selection order from ESPN.

If I'm correct, starting Week 3 of each season, the selection order goes something like:

(1*) CBS (3:30PM)
--- (*Note, CBS gets two doubleheader weekends declared before the season starts: I think one is a 12:30 pm/3:30 pm pairing and the other is a 4 pm/8 pm pairing. During these two weekends, CBS would get both the first and second selection of SEC games.)

(2) ESPN (night game)

(3) ESPN2 (night game)

(4) SECN (evening game)

(5) SECN (noon game)

(6) SECN (4pm game...this one's pretty much last selected)

Sometimes ESPNU is also used but I don't know where exactly if fits in here.

I'm fairly certain that September 24th and November 5th will be the two Saturday's chosen by CBS.

September 24th looks like the best overall weekend for conference games.

I forgot one more thing.

CBS's contract also allows before the season for it to select the rights in advance to two later season SEC games, along with the day after Thanksgiving SEC game (which is now set up as Missouri vs Arkansas).

So along with the Missouri vs Arkansas game, one of those advance selections will probably be the Florida-Georgia rivalry game. CBS has selected that game in advance every year, at least as far back as 2010.

I hope football doesn't get in the way of my day time stories on Tuesday September the 20th.
