Seen a lot of talk comparing our team to the 2019 LSU team. Offenses are definitely both explosive and powerful, but I’d give the edge to LSU’s defense so far. Here’s a stat comparison after 6 games each:

2019 LSU: Ranked 2nd, 6-0, Defeated 2 AP Top 10 teams (Texas, UF), only played 2 ranked teams, 561.67 ypg, 52.5 ppg, Allowed 317.5 ypg, Allowed 21.2 ppg, Has ranked Auburn and Alabama left before postseason

Joe Burrow: 80% cp, 2,157 yards, 25 TDs, 3 INTs, 221.1 Passer Rating, 105 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs

Jamarr Chase: 30 catches, 578 yards, 8 TDs

2022 Tennessee: Ranked 3rd, 6-0, Defeated 4 AP Top 25 teams, 1 AP top 10 team (Alabama), 551.1 ypg, 47.7 ppg, Allowing 425.3 ypg, Allowing 23 ppg, Has ranked Kentucky and Georgia left before postseason

Hendon Hooker: 70% cp, 1817 yards, 15 TDs, 1 INT, 187.7 Passer Rating, 287 rushing yards, 3 rushing TDs

Jalin Hyatt: 33 catches, 595 yards, 10 TDs

At this point in the season I’d give Tennessee the nod in strength of schedule and impressive wins, Joe Burrow in QB performance, and Jalin Hyatt in WR performance.

I've heard of comparisons to the 2019 LSU team as well. I've thought about it a bit and as much as I really love the 2022 Tennessee team, I think of 2019 LSU as the best team I've ever seen play. They demolished some really strong, solid teams. They beat Georgia like a drum in the SEC championship game and same for Clemson in the national championship game.

I agree that LSU's defense was very good. If the Tennessee defense improves over the last half of the season this would be a closer comparison but for now 2019 LSU has a pretty significant edge over a really good 2022 Tennessee team. Just my opinion.

That 2019 LSU team is one of the best ever. Their defense was not good in the first half of that year, but that gradually gelled. I’m really hoping ours will too. I think we are really good, but the defense still needs to improve some before I start to think we can win the whole thing.

No comparison...2019 LSU only beat two top 10 teams in their first 6 games....we're doing better then they did so far.

Our defense is no where near close to LSU's that year. LSU was dominant on all sides of the ball. LSU by 2 TD's.

We're only halfway through the season. Seems silly to compare 6 games to a season played in the past.

Well done and appreciate the time to put this together. Would be hard for any team to match the performance of 2019 LSU, but the similarities are there. I think one thing both teams had or have in common is enthusiastic player friendly coaches that exude confidence. That clearly showed up on game day. Huepel is more talented IMO, but LSU had more Jimmy's and Joe's. I do believe this team has NC traits that do reflect in comparisons like this one.

Also have to keep in mind that Tillman is our Jamar Chase, Burrows completion percentage is ridiculous
