Trump got my attention during a republican debate in 2016 when he said he intended to hold China accountable for their currency manipulation (which is the real reason for the increasing trade deficit with the US). He was the first presidential candidate I'd ever heard address the issue, but after the election he just applied tariffs. That doesn't do anything to deter China from manipulating their currency. It just makes their goods more expensive. In the meantime our trade deficit with China hit a 14 year high this year, and China has fostered other trade relationships globally. China has a larger influence globally than they did four years ago.
