Instant reactions to the release of the first men's college basketball NET rankings, headlined by No. 1 Purdue

Tennessee comes in at #11 in the first NET Rankings of the season. Not too bad. Just one SEC program sits above us, and that is LSU at #2.
This is just further reason of why NET means nothing in December lol LSU is not the No. 2 team in the country right now by any metric.

If only we knew how NET was actually calculated, but they keep that under lock and key for some reason.

Just a small sample size. LSU is #2 in the RPI as well. The NET has been tweaked and simplified.

6 of 8 of LSU’s opponents have a .500 or better record. It will adjust though.

Arkansas and Kentucky and the rest of the SEC need to fix their scheduling issue. I truly believe the SEC is one of the two best conferences in the country, and come tournament time our performance will reflect that, but some of these programs refusing to play anyone worth their salt before January is embarrassing.

Only 4 teams in the NET Top 50?

Will be interesting to watch this once conference play starts but this is what I was thinking in the thread about the SEC’s bad day. Once conference play starts it’s basically a zero-sum game for the conference. Of course there will be teams like Colorado St, Wyoming, San Francisco that will fall due to conference SOS but going to be hard for the conference in total to move much when conference w/l means one team generally moves up and the other moves down. Becomes a net 0

True. In the moment, watching Kentucky lose to a BAD Notre Dame team is funny, and makes us Vol fans feel all fuzzy, but it probably would have been much better for us if they had won that game.

I think it's probably safe to say the top of the SEC is as good as any other conference, but the bottom of the SEC is an atrocity. Vanderbilt, Mizzou, Georgia, etc. Just really bad, bad, bad teams.

Understandable. I try to just cheer for "best outcome for Tennessee" and until January the best outcome for Tennessee is honestly all SEC teams winning. It's still funny, and I laugh, when hilarious crap like the Gators losing to 0-7 Texas Southern happens. But, right now we need the SEC to look a bit more shiny.

Alabama and Auburn are really the only two teams doing their part. Pre-season, the Arizona game next week looked like it wouldn't be anything too special, but man it's a HUGE opportunity for us to make a statement when I see a lot of pundits already calling us fraudulent. A win against Arizona would be massive for the resume and the SEC.

There was a tool that would calculate RPI based on game outcomes and you could kind of see the impact to Tennessee. Bartorvik has a daycast feature which is supposed to do something like that but I wonder if it’s accurate in any way.

All the rest of the SEC, sure. UK can get bent and go 0-30 for all I care. But I live here, so I extra hate them.

Haha, fair. I definitely hate Kentucky and love to watch them squirm. I just want the Vols to be in the best position possible to get a good-seed in March, and we have fewer opportunities for resume wins if the SEC falls off a cliff before January. But, hey, just beat Arizona next week and that probably takes care of itself.
