My wishlist for this season:

Defense:
1. SALY --- same as last year on effort and intensity
2. We had one of the best Ds in the country, so don't mess it up
3. Try to keep Key out of foul trouble, but I would resist changing the substitution pattern early in the year if she does get in foul trouble. Why? I want her to learn to play with fouls. No more bailing her out with time on the bench.

Offense:
1. Lots of improvement needed --- I'm going to say we need to Heupelize the offense "Heup" it up.
2. Speed - Fast break on turnovers and long rebounds. We are looking for a layup or uncontested 3 every time.
3. Speed - Secondary break on short rebounds or made shots. The secondary break should be structured ball movement with the opportunity to hit the first post (runner), then the second post (trailer), then ball reversal. So we want quick, efficient shots for an open post or an open 3.
4. Speed - Never allow the ball to be walked up the court. Pass and RUN. Fastbreak/Secondarybreak then straight transition into the offensive set.
5. Spacing - Spread that floor for offensive sets. Develop and utilize the corner 3 (Tess, Puckett, Striplin, Pissott). Create space for posts to work and Horston and Jackson to drive.
6. Spacing - By the time the shot clock is low the defense should be stressed and there may be significant mismatch opportunities. It's at this time that Horston or Jackson need to do what they do. Exploit a mismatch if they have it or work a highball screen to create a mismatch and then drive/kickout.
7. Purpose - all movements have purpose from fast break to secondary break to offensive set to low shot clock situation. We should know what we're doing and the defense should be scrambling.
8. Purpose - Players should have the green light to shoot any "efficient shot" defined as any 2-point shot that you can hit 50% of the time or any 3-point shot you can hit 30% of the time. 1 shot : 1 point rule
9. Purpose - Finding efficient shots early in the shot clock should reduce turnovers. Overall turnover reduction should be an emphasis. A possession with 0 shots = 0 points every time.
10. Purpose - Crash the dang offensive boards.

We have the perfect personnel to do this, all of this.

I would really like to see us create some shot differentials this season in all the games meaning we get up way more shots than the opponent. We usually won the boards but lost the turnover battle by to wide a margin. I'm setting the offensive boards at 15 a game and the turnovers the same 15. We weren't good at forcing turnovers last season this year I think were going to be great at it. I think were going to be a lot better this season and I think the 70 a game we average last season becomes 80. If we can continue the great defense which we seemed to lose late in the season mainly due to injuries then we'll be a great team. The bench is stronger, the experience better, and the variety of ways we can score elite. First time in a while we have multiple options for the three point shot and it appears we want have very many weak links on defense that Key had to try and correct for us which usually resulted in some foul trouble.

It has been many years since that thought wasn't more fantasy than actual possibility, and it sure feels good to be back in the hunt again.

THANK YOU, LADY VOLS! 🧡

I can only imagine the media coverage once the forgotten giant of women’s basketball finally makes it back to the FF and National Championship! I can’t wait!

Stay healthy.
Im praying for this too , with horston's early injury in the closed scrimmage id be very cautions as a HC . She's the one player we definitely cannot afford to lose because we have no one who can do all the things Jordy does. We have a sprinkle of players who can do 1 of each things Jordy does but not all . Please let this just be a minor issue and not an actual tear. Burrells injury last season in game 1 gave us a big set back in confidence that we almost regained upon her return as she was clearly not the same player but as soon as she returns our heartbeat is lost for the season with Keyen . Then we finally start to find somewhat of a groove if that's even possible and lose Jordy last season . This season we have to stay healthy there's too much riding on this years results for everyone . HC included.

Remember the Pat's Maxim: Offense sells tickets, Defense wins games, and Rebounding wins Championships.

So: 1) Play defense better than the opponent
2) Rebound better than the opponent
3) Win some championships

That Kellie not become Holly. Here it is, the opportunity of her career. It's like her whole 20 plus yr career has built toward this. Never had this much talent, support, or hype. A solid coach for sure, but never actually proven at this level. Just like Holly. May her outcome be different. I'm probably jinxing her by saying there's every indication KJH will be successful.

That Jordan W, Jordan H, Rickea, and Key have the Sr. seasons of their dreams. All have been thru so much, and all, like their coach, have been close but never quite consistently successful at this level. Let it Be.

That chemistry remains strong and there are no major playing time issues. This will be a challenge. I hope the sophs can stay happy. A few simply are not going to play very much when it all shakes out after Christmas.

That our offensive ballhandling, spacing and movement is better and we have flow in the half court. I realize this team is born to run, but at times we will be forced into an actual offense. IMO, for Horston and Jackson to have each other is everything. Horston is free to be herself offensively and do the many things she does well. No pressure to handle, no pressure to be the only scoring alternative. Key likewise will benefit so much from having Hollingshead.

That they, and we, have fun! I can't wait!

Great post!

And I agree re the offense. Against top teams, the run-and-gun style and generating most of the offense through turnovers/transition opportunities isn't going to work. I want to see what the offense looks like when we're forced to execute the halfcourt details in a big game scenario when you're playing the UConn's, Stanford's South Carolina's, etc. IMO, to win an SEC Championship or get past the second weekend of the tournament, we will have to take that next step on the offensive side of the ball.

Having a true, high-IQ PG should really help.

GLV!
