Posted below are key metrics for the Vols both Nationally (against all FBS) and SEC (against SEC opponents only). A few observations and then the numbers...

SEC
-> Still not near the offensive numbers of CJH's first two years. Is this: Golesh? Offensive line play? WRs? Scheme? QB? Abandoning the tempo?
-> Passing offense is in the bottom half of the SEC. Not good considering the talent behind the center.
-> Converting in the Red Zone was also not good (might also have to do with sub-par field goal kicking)
-> Defense continues to trend up, top five in most categories
-> Special teams seems to have regressed in all categories this year

Nationally
-> Vols continue to be a top tier team nationally in all statistics. Thank GOD for CJH.
-> Vols continue to do more with less...a #16 team composite ranking (recruiting and transfer portal) and they still outperform all others with the same talent composite
-> #12 nationally in scoring offense, even with a #77 ranked passing stat. TBH, this has a lot to do with pummeling cupcake wins and strength of schedule but still...gotta beat up the teams you are supposed to beat up.
-> Penalities...CJH teams I guess just don't care about penalties? I swear there is at least one score in every game due to the number of penalties.
-> Time of possession...way up. This is not good. I like the 'gimmicky' offense that scores every 82 seconds. I guess if the defense isn't on the field 7/8ths of the game, their stats look a lot better, ha!

Here are the numbers...

I agree the #12 in scoring was driven by cupcakes and (unusually) easy schedule, but I think Dylan Sampson had a lot to do with it also.

And sacks allowed was really bad...bottom 15 89th in the country. OL has to get better at pass blocking, but Nico needs to be more decisive also. He did better as the year went by, but still has a ways to go.

Sacks allowed were not good, but it wasn’t even in the bottom 40 in the country according to that graph. And it was basically the same OL as the year before, with Heard instead of Mincey

The 2024 defensive numbers look better than I remember. Thank goodness for our Defense and our defensive coaches. Great show.

You are partially correct. I was looking at the 2021 stats by mistake, which was 124th in the country. We actually were 89th, which, is still really bad. Not anywhere near what a playoff team should be, and as most Vol fans with a pulse are painfully aware, was a huge part of our offensive issues.

Absolutely. But our cupcakes were worse, and if you look at scoring, we definitely ran the score up on them.

We were only 9th in the SEC in scoring in conference games, and we had a pretty weak SEC schedule this year.

Also said cupcakes were a combined 16 and 33, and the only one with a winning record was FCS Chattanooga (the others are all BCS). Without Chattanooga the record is 9 and 28.

I can't imagine being this kind of fan. The stats are right there in your face and you're just like "there MUST be a reason that this isn't true"

For 25, less predictability.

More trick plays (zero this season).

More RB and TE passes

Less Sacks, Improve OT play

Improve LB's

Looking at osu players, maybe better S&C too

That's a good start

Red Zone conversions and penalties are U-G-L-Y.

Probably another win on the schedule every year if we can get those numbers respectable.
Agree. There are enough penalties each game for at least one score.

Seems to be a feature of Heupels teams. I wonder if (a) it’s a result of the offensive scheme or (b) he just doesn’t care?
