The staff tossed out a new offer this week to Virginia guard Justyn Fernandez, a player who has turned a lot of heads this summer and seen his stock skyrocket. He’s currently ranked outside the top-150 but that likely changes at the next update after the summer he’s had.

Fernandez, we were told at the time, actually caught the staff’s eye way back in June the first weekend they were out on the road, but they didn’t offer at the time. After seeing more of him over the last month they elected to pull the trigger.

I have heard great reviews from co-workers, Under Armour coaches, and collegiate coaches about Justyn Fernandez. He definitely made the people who vouched for him look fantastic on Sunday. He is another example of how good athleticism coupled with a great motor can equal consistent production in any setting of the game. Whether it be in the half-court or transition, Fernandez was playing hard. He has a slash-first mentality, showed great speed, and could be found above the rim to finishing a play or securing a rebound. His long-range jump shot was not falling, but he looks capable from behind the arc. More reps in that area could not hurt his development. But coaches and scouts are in love with power game, motor, and evolving skillset as an attack-first forward.
UAA Session II: Final Day Scouting Observations

We first saw Fernandez at the Team Thrill Showcase earlier this Spring and came away intrigued. We were anxious to get eyes on him in Hampton and he certainly didn’t disappoint. The 6’6 guard/wing was undoubtedly the biggest stockriser in the gym, with a dominant performance against a loaded New World 3SSB team. Justyn displayed elite open-court athleticism with eye-popping transition dunks where his head approached rim level. More impressive though was his ability to knock down perimeter shots from distance. Fernandez connected on multiple triples from NBA range with one-motion mechanics, good arch and nice lower-body lift. He had flashes as an on-ball creator that changed direction/speed with a live dribble to get separation on his defender. Justyn is a no-brainer high-major prospect that projects as a 2/3 with outstanding upside as an impact two-player at the next level. He will be one of the more coveted prospects in the country in July.
