This evaluation is tricky, so I cheated. I copy and pasted the one I did in 2012 since I have to go with the last time I saw him, and added a little bit to the final thoughts. Tomorrow on deck is Antonio Barton.
Strengths: Quite simply, Jeronne Maymon is a man. He is super strong, one of the strongest in college basketball. He is tough inside, and can finish with both hands. He has a great motor, and doesn't quit on any play. Jeronne is also a smart offensive player. He doesn't take shots he can't make, and is an above average passer at his position. Jeronne has a quick first step that helps him get to the basket when he faces up, and has a decent pump fake that can help him draw contact on shots. Again, Jeronne can finish around the rim as well as anyone. He shot 56% from the field, while being the second leading scorer on the team. He also is a pretty good free throw shooter, shooting 66% last year, improving by over 40% from 2010-2011. Jeronne is a very good rebounder, and great on the offensive glass. He was fourth in offensive rebounding percentage, and was top five in rebounds per game for the conference. Jeronne is also very good at not fouling. He averaged three fouls per game in almost thirty minutes a night, pretty good for a big man like him. Jeronne uses his athletic ability to finish around the paint, and is a tough one on one post defender.
Weaknesses: Jeronne doesn't have a lot of posts move. He mostly uses his strength to finish shots, and struggled in double teams last year. He also is prone to get his shot block, being barely 6'6, and while has good athleticism, can't elevate over bigger defenders. He must improve against double teams also, sometimes forcing bad shots trying to make a move to the hoop. His biggest weakness is his inability to shoot an outside jumper. It limits his offensive game and teams can slouch off him in the high and low post when he wants to attack. He can't block shots, only 10 last year, because he has little wingspan. His help defense is above average, but he does a good job on switches and uses his surprising first step to funnel dribblers into the help when he has to play a guard.
Final Thoughts: Jeronne Maymon, when healthy, is one of the fifteen best players in the SEC. He's a rebounding beast and can score inside five feet as well as anyone in the country. The word around town is Maymon is back to his 2011-2012 self, which is good because he needs every ounce of explosiveness. But his game will always be built on his freakish strength, and he still has. His minutes will be watched carefully, so his numbers might not reach his 2011-2012 stats, but he will definitely bring a lot to the table this season. He's the leader, the heart and soul of the team, and it's so good to have the man back.
