25th anniversary of "The Play"

I saw a show about this this week, and they mentioned that to this day Stanford refers back to that game as a win. They refuse to accept the play, citing that one of the players was down, and that one of the laterals was forward. I have no idea if there is merit to that. I looked close, and I can't find any "conclusive video evidence" of either.

Last Spring I hung out with 3 guys from that Stanford team (while visiting San Diego).

They all really hate that game and swear the guy was down.

More over, they believe it got a good coach fired.

It was interesting to hear their view of their team that year.

I've always thought the best part of that play was the guy screaming "OH, THE BAND IS OUT ON THE FIELD!!" :eek:lol:

Classic stuff.

I agree. The laterals all look backward.

The one they argue about is a bit tricky. It is as they are rushing down the right sideline near the end. The player throws it to his right as he is running. The ball is caught behind him....but because he is running forward, the point is made that the ball is released at like the 42 .... and the other players catches it at the 43 (or something along those yardages) .... they say the ball's momentum carried it forward even though it did go behind the player (i.e., he ran past it).

I've never taken the time to watch the yardages closely enough to see. I'm just happy that Cal's most memorable win was probably a sham :).

Stanford should be glad the play ended up as it is. It is the only reason people even know that rivalry exists. It may be the only reason people know the teams exist.

Disagree - great moments in sports are not limited to championship contenders. Winning in an improbable way is at the core of sports.

i agree with you on this.

they were interviewing the announcer a few days ago on ESPN and he was saying he's never reacted like that to anything before and was so caught in the moment of that play, he just lost all control.
