I watched the DePaul vs Texas A&M game and DePaul had 29 assists on 32 made baskets.
Do the Lady Vols have that many assists so far this year?

Hard to get assists when you can't shoot the ball

DePaul averages 22 APG. The NCAA leader is Baylor. They average 24 APG.

UT is ranked 98th, a combination of poor shooting and maybe a unwillingness to share the ball.

One of the major sports networks posted a clip from one of the most recent UCONN games showing a Husky play that utilized EIGHT passes and ONE dribble...resulting in a great look & easy basket.

That's the style we want to emulate...not a dribble-and-hand-off-fest.

Shooting is only part of the problem. We don't run enough. We have an offense that rarely leads to layups; if you watch ND, they run players off of picks and get a lot of layups every game. We almost never get layups off of picks. More generally, we are a TERRIBLE passing team and have been a terrible passing team for about 15 years. I've told this story before: One of the first times we played UConn, ages ago, early in Geno's tenure, we had more talent and won the game, but what was IMMEDIATELY apparent was how much better they were at passing and moving the ball. The ball and player movements are quick and crisp. We are notorious for standing around. Against the Wichita State zone, we had guards who, on some possessions, passed the ball and then stayed where they were on the perimeter. Walick thinks that if we can just get the ball inside, we'll score. That is not the case. Zones are designed to make it hard for score inside. This is why we throw the ball away a lot--and even if one of our bigs gets the ball inside, they are often doubled. If your players are always moving, and the ball is always moving, then the defense must move with you--and that is what creates shooting space for your players--guards or bigs. You got to get the defenders moving by moving yourself and the ball--crisply. We don't, which is why our offense is stagnant.

A team's assist-to-turnover ratio is a great indicator of how efficient you are offensively. Ours has been bad for ages, we do not have an efficient offense--and this is why we struggle game after game. And yet Warlick, our brilliant leaders, doesn't get it. She is TRULY stuck in the 1970s/1980s--just as Summit was as well. This is why we need a younger, smarter staff.

One of the articles I read indicated that Pat was at all the practices except two and Holly was carrying out the practices as if she were Pat, not getting involved, but having each assistant conduct specific drills. She said she was giving them control of the drills so they can be a head coach one day...

I have never been to a practice so I don't really know what is going on, but if this is what is going on, then Holly does not coach but perpetuates Pat's coaching philosophy as if Pat is still the coach.

There is nothing wrong with this except that Pat, in her best days, would probably change/add/delete/modify drills that were not effective and figure out a game plan for each different opponent with scouting reports. Currently, we seem to have the same game plan for everyone.

Perhaps Holly needs Pat to step away from the practices and start putting her own footprint on the program and get more fresh blood by hiring assistants from a proven pedigree.

Coaching gets more and more sophisticated and "defense and rebound" no longer cuts it.

Many coaches (including Waltz) have observed a UConn practice and Geno has indicated that he would welcome all interested coaches/students.

I have speculated in the past the Lady Vols spend too much practice time in specific drills and not enough time actually playing basketball. During a game it almost looks like the players have never actually played with each other before, and maybe that's the case if they spend all their practice time in specific drills.

That statement should be reversed to make it logical.

Sandvol,it makes perfect logic when you think that had more shots been hit, then assist total would be higher. Also,LVJeff has a point about fewer drills and more basketball playing in practice. Drills are okay to instill fundamentals, but one learns by playing. Scrap the "practice players" and scrimmage ones on twos until their tongues hang out. The " practice players" are obviously not helping the team, although for all we know, they may be making this team look bad also. Again, you learn by playing and improve by more playing.

37 assists for Baylor in their win today. Niya Johnson had 19 by herself.

I dream of the day that Tennessee can have the level of efficiency against cupcakes that the top teams have been having.

I was surprised to see only 9 responses in a thread that I consider to be the heart of the problems the team is having.

A lack of assists indicates a lack of a fluid motion offense and a lack of team play. Look at the ranked teams and check out their assist numbers. Six of the top teams in assists are ranked in the top 10 of the AP and USA Today polls.

A/TO is one of those "shortcut" stats that tell you a great deal about a team and its offense. I posted a long comment on Rocky Top Talk where I pointed out the stats from the WS game that alarmed me, and A/TO was right at the top of the list.

Until this team learns to run an offense that generates passes and assists, they will lose to good defenses.

Would be nice if all 3,721 that saw that game could get a bit more involved.

Here you are, our guards' A/TO ratios this season:
Reynolds.......19:17..........1.12
Carter...........20:21...........0.95
Cooper..........23:29...........0.79
Middleton......17:13...........1.31
DeShields......26:26...........1.00
Jackson...........4:2............2.00

And for comparison, a couple of other teams' PGs this season, and the career numbers from our most recent PG.
Lindsey Allen...53:23........2.30
Mo. Jefferson...46:25........1.84
AMass...........518:275......1.88

Now, let's throw in shooting percentage, total & 3PT

Reynolds.......19:17..........1.12.........260......091
Carter...........20:21...........0.95........378......167
Cooper..........23:29...........0.79........341......250
Middleton......17:13...........1.31........391......167
DeShields......26:26...........1.00........378......286
Jackson...........4:2............2.00........200......083

None of our guards are doing much to facilitate team offense, two are shooting very poorly overall, and none of them can throw it in the ocean from behind the arc. Collectively, they're not going to win any games for us, and these are numbers that they put up against some marginal competition. Anyone who thinks Cooper is going to somehow save this team's season is dreaming.

This group includes 4 McD AA's and some very good athletes. We need a new guard coach far more than we need a new head coach, IMHO.

Right now DePaul is a better team than Tennessee. We have better players but all their players have fairly good shooting abilities and are way more aggressive. They certainly shoot the 3 ball better. For three and one-half quarters, they gave UCONN all they could handle. Not to pile on but they are better coached.

This sums up one reality, we are in deep, deep s--t without a shovel.

I knew it wasn't good but am a little surprised the numbers are what they are.

These stats show how truly awful our guards are. They don't create baskets for others and they can't shoot: other than that, they are fantastic! I would start playing Middleton more, and Reynolds less, against teams who are zoning us, for starters. Reynolds should just play less period--she's been bad and just seems to have no role in our offense against a zone. And her defense is sketchy as well. I need to go look at how many minutes she's been averaging--beyond the obvious answer that is "too many."
