Now that the dust has settled I thought I would give my own personal breakdown of the results I would like to see over the next 3 years for Coach Jones to show that he can lead us back to relevance.

I'll admit I was not overly excited about the Coach Jones hire at the beginning, perhaps I was too caught up in the hype of getting that irrefutable big name coach that no one could deny would win quick and unite the fan base, and I don't just mean Gruden either; simply a big name coach. In any case, the crazy whirlwind of a coaching search is now over and it is time to give the man in the driver's seat a chance to prove his worth. He has started out well with his speech in the press conference and then with retaining Coach Graham. It would have been nice to bring Tee back home but I don't see how Tee staying at USC could be faulted to Coach Jones. Below is my year to year breakdown of what Coach Jones will need to accomplish to show he can get the job done and bring us back to the level that all of us Vol fans crave.

Year 1 - Become bowl eligible, that is it. We don't even have to get the bowl win; eligibility is the key for year one. It would be, although only slightly, an improvement from this past year.

Year 2 - Bowl eligibility is a given by this time and a bowl win depending on the level of opponent in the bowl. Secondly we need a quality win over a quality opponent and not a Cincy or NC State. It needs to be against a ranked opponent and/or SEC rival. While Florida and Alabama might be out of our reach still at this point a Georgia or South Carolina shouldn't be that far of a stretch.

Year 3 - Any question or worry about reaching a respectable bowl should be gone, it should be a given by this time. Next we need to at least be competing for the East, we don't have to win it just be in the conversation. For the past three years under Dooley any hope of the East was gone by early to mid-October.

Year 4 and on - Be relevant on the national stage.

This is very similar to the grace period I was willing to give Dooley when he was hired. I found myself over the past 2-3 years trying to rationalize too many of Dooley's short comings as a coach into an excuse for more time. The year one rebuild and installation of new coaches, scheme, and personnel, year two with injuries to key players, along with countless others. Year 3 he had no more excuses and had failed at all of the above mentioned goals with the exception of year one. Clearly it was time for him to go, I think I knew that after the Kentucky (2011) game but kept trying to fool myself until the Miss St (2012) game, by the time Missouri rolled around I already knew the outcome of any game we played that we didn't clearly outmatch our opponent. Coach Jones goes into a better overall situation than Dooley with a better resume as well, but that is nowhere near a guarantee to win at this level. I'm really hoping Coach Jones gets it done and he should be given the time required to do so, it is a real shame that Vol fans have to hit the reset button once again and allow this drought of relevance to pass but if everything works out maybe it will all be worth it.

Those would exactly be my expectations of Butch. He needs to make consistent progress through out every year. There should be no 1 step forward and 2 steps back, like it was under Dooley. I praise Butch Jones Cincy teams for being very technical, and well coached.

Just show improvement from week to week and year to year, just do that and we will be going back to the top, a lot on here think you jump to the top in one year, it doesnt happen that way, it will take 3 good years just to reach a 9 win season at least.

If Butch gets the correct number of players on the field in year 1 then I already declare this a positive hire.

Reasonable goals. I could see the Vols pulling an upset against USCe or Georgia next year. Close this year. Improved defense will be they key.

With Auburn replacing MSU, a win over the barn and a win over Missouri should all but guarantee bowl eligibility.

Improvements year 1....continue to develop a more impressive run game, keep the passing game solid, and coach up a defense that can produce 3 and outs and force multiple punts during a game...and be bowl eligible.

Improvements year 2....improve even more on year one expectations and beat a ranked team or two....go to a bowl and win.

Improvements year 3....further continue on years 1 and 2.....also make Tennessee relevant in the SEC East....New Year's Day Bowl game.

Improvements year 4....further continue on years 1, 2, and 3.....win the SEC East....CBJ has proven he can win conference championships at every school he has coached at....and rather quickly....prove it here by then.

Year 2.. Officially confirm Saban's a little person

Year 3.. Schedule a Tee Time for Spurrier every Sat.

Finish in the top 25 in recruiting and get bowl eligible in Year 1.

Year 2 and Year 3 will be ascertained once year 1 is over and we see what Jones is capable of in recruiting.

If the guy can't improve recruiting and eventually recruit with the likes of Saban and Muschamp, we will be looking for a new coach by year 4 most likely. These five year rebuilding projects are a thing of the past.

Willingness to accept accomplishments that Dools was expected to do when he came are unacceptable to me. When Dools came the place was a dumpster fire with a bad roster, the Fulmer firing/disaster being fresh and contentious, followed by Kiffin bolting in the middle of recruiting season. There were AA issues as well. Assistant coaches were an issue and virtually none had worked together previously. Dools was an inexperienced head coach with a losing record. As a result he was paid much less at around $2 mill per year. The OP's list was reasonable for him.

Not so with Jones. He walks in with a more talented, experienced roster despite the NFL defections. The fan base is ready for a positive change with virtually nobody lamenting Dools' departure. There are no questions about the system, schemes and assistant coaches. Most have been working together at other locations over the years. The DC and OC were with the HC for several years in similar roles. The AA issues are behind them and there is a relatively new AD. Finally, Jones is being paid Top 15 head coach compensation at $3+ mill per year.

My expectations are that we get what we paid for. The roster fits his schemes. They use zone blocking schemes and power, counters, and traps on running plays with H-backs. They go 3-5 wide in the passing game and stretch the field. They use 4-3 and the nickel depending on the opponent with 2 deep zones in obvious passing downs. Everything I have seen from their system is tested and proven in the SEC to work by other succcessful teams. So it comes down to player recruitment, development, play calling, and motivation.

Year 1: 8+ wins
Year 2: 9+ wins
Year 3: SECCG

Don't care if bowl games are included in the win total. After Year 3 win the SECCG on occasion and go to the playoff.

I agree totally! At this point, the coaches, staff, players and recruits need our SUPPORT! We need realistic positive posts like yours. However, I must say I am sick of all the Negavols making negative comments about our coaches and PLAYERS. This crap needs to end. I am a Vol fan and will support our rich tradition win or lose. That doesn't mean a coaching change is not sometimes needed but whining never accomplishes anything. We will RISE TO THE TOP! GBO!!!!!!!!!!!

BuTch Jones needs a fair shot!

Year 1 could be better than year two with all the lineman leaving. Hope im wrong
That's my fear. Dooley's best year was year 1. He should have been bowling in year 2 (no excuse for Kentucky loss) but even with a bowl they would have only won 2 conference games against Vandy and UK.

I think CBJ needs a big win in year 1. Dooley almost got it with LSU and I think that would have completely changed his tenure.

In fact when you look at the schedule, 6 wins is impossible without at least 1 upset. Assuming they win 3 of the 4 OOC games (with Oregon being a loss), you still need 3 more wins. Let's go ahead and say we get Vandy and UK so we're up to 5. Who is number 6? My guess is Mizzou but who knows how good they'll be. Is Vandy an upset?

For me, for this to be a good start to the CBJ tenure he needs to beat at least 1 of UA/AU/UGA/USC/UF. I think AU/UGA/USC are all do-able.

And call me crazy, but I think a win against OU is do-able. Oregon will certainly be favored. But UT has the element of surprise with a new staff.

Wait...when do yo expect 8 wins minimum? How long does he have before tossing him? Next year, 8 wins would be way better than average. Start changing coaches fast with unreasonable expectations & watch what happens. No good coach will want to come & recruits will run. Original poster is more realistic.
