As much as I detest OSU and as much as Jim Tressel covered up his lying in an attempt to say he was protecting his players, the NCAA shares the blame in Maurice Clarett's spiral and football failures.

The system is only set up to help players "succeed" if they follow the cookie-cutter mold that the NCAA dictates. Well and good except that it doesn't work for everyone.

MC is a prime example and the very system that the NCAA had in place actually contributed to his ultimate failure in football and in life.

OSU made a deal with the devil when they signed Clarett. He had been in jail before he signed with OSU. He was nothing but trouble then and now!

It was a good story. College athletes are definitely manipulated, but after the stuff he said it's understandable they didn't want to help him.

Little harsh. Don't think he's "trouble" nowadays.

Andy Geiger was deathly afraid of what might happen should the NCAA come around. He was right in being afraid and the only way he could try to prevent it was to take Maurice out of the equation. Which he did.

It wasn't personal, just business.

It seemed like a vendetta to me for what MC said about not being able to go back home to see his friend, calling him out, and him being unappreciative to the school. The stuff about penalty runs and what not was ridiculous. Jim Brown was right, it was BS.

I can certainly see the other side, but that is JMO.

The way Maurice Clarett has turned his life around is admirable and unbelievable. Before seeing this doc I always thought of him as a selfish, impatient and arrogant tool. But now his life is complete affirmation that some people actually can change, and change dramatically. Bravo to Maurice.

I was interested in this episode. Don't know much about Tressell, but ESPN did a segment about a month ago about the class that Tressell teaches at Akron. Seemed like a nice guy.

I respect MC more after having a chance to watch. It was obvious the the AD did not want to be upstaged by Clarett. I do feel that Tressel could have done a better job sticking up for his player though.

How does the NCAA share the blame for his self destruction? I am happy he has turned his life around but he had chances to redeem himself and he failed. I really don't see how anyone else but MC can be blamed.

when your an 18 year old kid and the ad of your school and ncaa are out to ruin your college career, I would say that would cause me to go crazy and without a good support system probably turn to a life of crime.

Also try sitting out of football for two years and see how well you turn out in the nfl. His career was ruined all because he called out the ad and said he should be able to enter the nfl early.

Maurice live tweeted this doc as it was on to explain extra stuff. I thought his explanation of the ESPN shoot was flawless. They said they wanted a cool action shot and he threw the jersey as he was coming off practice to a PR assistant in hopes to get a good picture. He had no clue the story they were building around anything.

No offense but there is a lot of crap in this post. Nobody was intentionally out to ruin his career. He made some bad decisions and got busted for it. There is no excuse for turning to crime, sorry.

If he never would have gotten a shot to play football again then you may have a point. But he got drafted and had a shot many NCAA athletes never get. He squandered his opportunity. He had 2 years to prepare for the NFL combine. He screwed up. Bottom line is as a person you are responsible for your own actions. He should have asked more questions and done more research about the rules.

I agree with every word of your post with the exception of the bolded. Andy Geiger didn't like being upstaged by an 18 year old kid. I agree to a certain extent he made his own bed, but it is clear the OSU leadership left him out to dry and only made matters worse.

Finally watched last night and great story. Sweater vest could have stood up for his players a bit more. If you preach family to your team then I'm sure a lot of them took notice how he basically no showed MC when he needed him the most. The AD is a baby.
