The Blizzard of 1993 started. What I remember the most is Kentucky killing Tennessee 101 40. My worst experience as a Tennessee Basketball fan. I crack up reading these posts that are bashing Rick Barnes. Rick Barnes has made Tennessee relevant in NCAA Basketball. I don't worry about Rick Barnes getting UT in trouble. Tennessee goes to the NCAA Tournament almost every year under Barnes. Ray Mears was successful at UT but started having health problems. Bruce Pearl was successful but was his own worst enemy. Don Devoe had success but most of it was early in his career. He never adjusted to the shot clock. UT Basketball has been snake bitten for years. Wade Houston was the worst coach in UT history. UT Basketball was the worst team in the SEC. Teams like Arkansas State and Western Carolina came to Thompson Boling Arena and kicked Tennessee butt. Rival fanbases had signs that read WILL COACH TENNESSEE FOR FOOD. FROM 1984 TO 1999 Tennessee never won an NCAA Tournament game. A lot of those years Tennessee didn't make the Tournament. For years I saw a lot of terrible Basketball from Tennessee. I started watching UT Basketball during the Ernie and Bernie days. I am sure a lot of posters remember the same things I remember. Watching all this bad Basketball for years makes me appreciate Rick Barnes a lot.

I remember the WBIR weather guy got stuck in Gatlinburg because he failed at predicting the blizzard.

I remember watching that 40-101 game at a friend’s in South Knoxville and must have left for West Knoxville just in time. Knoxville was shut down for about a week. Some people didn’t have power for nearly two weeks.

I came home that night after dinner at Calhouns at the River and it was raining. I woke to the sound of trees breaking from the weight of the snow. I had just bought a new Chevy Silverado 4x4 and spent the days delivering food to all the friends I knew. I even went down Cedar bluff Rd and was passing Rookies Sports Bar and it was open. Ken and Virginia that owned it got a hotel room close by and they stayed because it was so bad they could not drive home. Place was packed!

I don’t think anyone will argue about Rick Barnes being a better basketball coach than Wade Houston. Good for Wade that his wife is a better businessperson and they’ve made lots of money over the years.

Just know this time next week we’ll be out of the tournament—as usual.

Crazy thing is We were 6th in the East and beat the 3rd ranked team from the West, Auburn, the night before.
Of course it was a home game for UK as well.

I thankfully didn't watch the game. A missionary family from Central Am was staying at my home that night and we were watching this young brash guy named Rush Limbaugh on TV. Started really nice snowfall. About midnight I woke up to loss of power and it was a blizzard w like 50mph winds. I thought Uh-oh this could be bad.
Power stayed out for a week and that family got stuck for 6 days w no power. Kept living room and kitchen 55-60 degrees by burning building materials in our cosmetic fireplace. All 8 of is slept around it. On 3rd or 4th day a neighbor with a tractor brought some real firewood. Used outdoor garbage cans full of snow to keep fridge foods cool. Crazy!

My mom took my cousin and me to the game in Knoxville that year and I remember there was a lot of snow and ice then. Tennessee pulled off the upset with the miracle 4 point play. That was my first game at TBA. Kentucky was out for revenge in that SECT rematch.

The day of the SECT matchup with UK, I came home from school and was exhausted (teenage growing, I guess). Usually, I had to work after school for my grandfather, but not that day, so I decided to take a quick nap. Fell asleep and when my mom came in to wake me up, it was dark. I said, “I missed the game!” She said, “you didn’t miss much.”

We are probably roughly the same age. I remember all this too well. Sometimes when fans haven’t traveled the same path we have traveled, they just can’t comprehend. Some fans just don’t want to hear the history and believe their way is the right way. I sat on my couch last night and was just glad I didn’t have to hope our name would show up.

We lived in a quiet subdivision, aptly named Rolling Hills. Almost all the hills were very steep and several hundred feet high. Once those hills froze over with ice and then got about another 12 inches of snow pack, we were stuck for a week. The only mode of transportation was my neighbors' 4 wheeler, but it didn't matter because all the stores were closed.

We rode everything we could down those hills. Sleds, inner tubes, knee boards, skis, and ourselves went down those hills. Even my mom and Dad got in on the action. That week was one of the most fun times had as a 15 year old.

Unfortunately Rick Barnes will be fully appreciated years from now. I lived through all those horrible years of basketball. I was recently talking to a father of a starter on Wade Houston’s team. He said what we all came to know…”Wade was a good man but probably the worst HEAD basketball coach I’ve ever met”!

I was living in Memphis and my grandmother passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 1993. We had receiving of friends on the evening of Friday, March 12 in Fountain City. Snow began while we were at funeral home and Director told us to go home because snow had started on Friday about 6:30pm.
We made it to my parents and we were not able to return to Memphis until Tuesday. We measured 27 inches of snow at my parent’s house without a drift.
