I thought there was a limit set by the SEC this year. How many players can a team back count?

I don't understand it either, they have signed 28-30 players the last few years so I don't understand the back count rule.

I've got to say I was really surprised by Auburn's recruiting fortunes. That said, it was long ago I had a knowledgeable person tell me only one or the other can thrive at the same time, it's either UGA or Auburn. Seems like the Dawgs are in for a dry spell for a few years.

Not that many. My understanding is they can only back count two. So they are going to have to sign and place several.

Sorry, I don't live on this site...I only visit every now and then...so I don't read every single thread. What is the difference between back counting and signing and placing?

Due to the pathetic academic standards in the state of Alabama, all out of state enrollees we're rewarded academic scholarships.

Here is the actual language of the 28 rule:

"13.9.1 Letter of Intent-Limitation. Each SEC member institution is limited to signing 28 football prospective student-athletes to a National Letter of Intent and/or institutional offer of financial aid from the February initial signing date through May 31st of each year."

I believe this means that EE's don't count at all toward the 28 rule. Backcounting has nothing to do with the 28 rule. EE's do not sign LOI's and sign their Financial Aid Papers before Signing Day.

The only signees that count towards the 28 are the ones that sign between Signing Day and May 31st. Therefore, as long as Auburn had 4 EE's, signing 32 total players, including EE's, does not put them in violation of the SEC's 28 rule.

This effectively makes the 28 rule a joke and nothing more than a PR stunt by the SEC.

Of course none of this has anything to do with the NCAA's 25 rule. This is where backcounts, greyshirts, and sign and place comes into play.

That plus, from my understanding, they did not sign 27 last year so the five early enrollees for them this year count towards last year's limit. SO if that is true then in all actuality only 27 players account for this year's class for them. Sabanocchio, is that right? Look at their class from last year, only 19 of those players actually enrolled.

The SEC limit is 28 signees per year. The NCAA limit for enrollees is 25 per year. Thus you can sign and place 3 signees per year. As for back counting; If in one year a team does not enroll 25 players, they can back count up to 5 early enrollees per year in the following year. So, Auburn can enroll 30 players and only has to place 2 of their signees.

Sign and Place: Signing a player and placing them in Prep/Juco.
Back counting: If a team enrolls less than the NCAA limit of 25, they can "roll over" the scholarships they didn't use to the next year, up to the limit of 5. Kind of like Cingular's roll over minutes.

If I messed anything up, someone please correct.

Also, mods..It might be worth keeping the sticky explaining how this works stickied, that way a year from now it doesn't have to be continually explained for those that aren't aware of how the process works.

i believe auburn should be penalized for 32 committs they made the rule cause arkansas took 36 last year, they want sign and place that many, thell be atleast 3 that will have to leave the program, they took 32 where they could get there needs filled and get all the better players who came late.the 2 and 3 star players who have been committed for 6 or 7 months will end up losing a year and going somewhere else because they were not in the top 27 ,i think that the last players signed should automaticly be placed in prep school and that means cory lemonier should have to be placed in juco or prep.what is the point in having a rule if teams are going to be abel to still over recruit i think auburn will be 7 over the limit .they got 25 or more last year so they cant back count any i guess they will be a few of these guys get very dissapointed,i wish tennessee could have gotten jeff whitaker ,shon coleman, roszell gayden and lemonier but we didnt.good luck not to all you war eagles fans i hope your penalized and that you lose several to division 2,because seven of these guys want be placed in juco or prep school and you have sevaral jucos already

So we had 8 early EE's this year. That means next year we can sign 33

Next year we can sign up to 31 if we have 3 or more EEs. Then we can enroll 28, and sign and place 3 more.

Thats because we signed 25-3 for the back counts to last year giving us 22 for this year, given that we dont' have to place anyone in Prep/Juco. If we do the number changes

You can only enroll up to 25 scholarship players per year, plus up to 3 players who you can sign & place.......

Sign & place means they don't have good enough grades to qualify, so they are sent to Prep school for 1 year, or Juco for 1-2 years. At that time, the recruit can either try to come back to the school he signed with, or go to another school, bc/ his original LOI was null and void.....this gives a maximum of 28 signees/ year, aka the Ole Miss rule.......

However, for early enrollees that come to school before Dec. 31, they can be back=counted to the previous recruiting year, if the school enrolled less than the 25 allowed.......

I don't think there is a limit to back=counting, but schools must also follow the overall 85 scholarship limit, which also comes into play when figuring out how many scholarships are available.

Make sense?

Read the language of the 28 rule. EE's don't count. The 28 rule is toothless.

The 25 and 85 rules are what binds us. Same as it ever was.

Tennessee can only back count 2 of the early enrollees.
