This was posted on UT Sports today. Lots of great wins have come on Sept 27th over the years and this was a good one that I thought would be fun to go back and watch. Lots of great names from Vol history--Gault, Hancock, White, Bates and a TB named James Berry. Tough defense kept Auburn from scoring.

Tennessee

Go Vols!

I was there. Doug Barfield's undoing was that day. AU had a defensive back, brother of Terry Beasley who was burned play after play. Sat in the Auburn section and the talk was hilarious. Also, sat next to a VERY attractive lady AU student who kept asking me about football. No problem answering every question she asked!
It was actually 33 years ago, 1980.
Bad year for AU as even the War Eagle passed that year.

I think that was the game where an Auburn Frat thought it would be a good idea to hand out oranges to throw at the Vols.

With Anthony Hancock and Willie Gault, just think if we had a quarterback in 1980 that could get the ball to them. In 1980 Hancock was the leading receiver with 33 catches all year.

I remember this game. It was the most perfect game I remember Tennessee ever playing. EVERYTHING we did went right.

And Yesterday in 1975, the Rocky Horror Picture Show made it's big screen debut.....

Sorry, just a useless piece of trivia.

A very bright spot in a year that was otherwise not so bright. We finished that year 5-6. We began the year with difficult losses to Georgia and Hershel Walker (16-15) and to the USC Trojans and Marcus Allen on a last second field goal (20-17). We never really overcame that slow beginning.

The 1980 team played arguably the toughest schedule in school history. In addition to the above games, we played the Pitt Panthers and Dan Marino and a very good Alabama team. Even though Marino was hurt for the game with UT, his backup was very capable (Rick Trocano was his name, I believe). That Pitt team was loaded with NFL talent.

Edit: I just checked it and that Pitt team finished #2 behind #1 Georgia. ESPN's Mark May was also on that team.

I think you would be hard pressed to find a more difficult schedule in UT history than in the 1980 season.

Man, am I old, I was there. But then again, I have been lucky & privileged to attend a lot of classic UT wins over the past 35 years.

I was lucky enough to be at the 1980 Auburn game with my brother, who is an Auburn fan. One of the best days if my life. QB was Jeff Olsweski if I remember correctly.
