Interesting.
I like the change making the players wait 5 days after the new coach is hired before they can enter the portal. At least give them a shot.
If an existing HC is replaced with an interim on the staff, I believe that would count as "hiring" or "announcing" a new head coach (someone else is now in the position). There is no specification that the new hire can't be an "interim."So a new coach has to be named within the 5 day window? This is a stupid new rule that holds the player hostage. Teams that fire their coach during the season rarely name a replacement and just finish out the season with an interim coach already on staff. Maybe I didn't read this article correctly. Is this only is a new hire is announced? This has to be challenged immediately with a law suit. Just another way to hold players hostage because the NCAA created this entire monster themselves
Well, coaches have that exact flexibility. In fact, under current conditions, a coach can leave for greener pastures anytime but if a school wishes to change coaches, they often have to pay a major buy-out clause. If there were less volatility in the coaching ranks, some of this problem would also be reduced. This is a bandage fix for the problem caused by removing the rule of having to sit out a year when transferring. Both the NIL problem getting as bad as it's gotten and the issue with losing so much of your roster when you fire a coach both stem from that particular rule change.
Some people will argue that the schools having that leverage is unfair. And maybe so. But schools lacking that leverage that's gotten us where we are. Team hopping, chasing money... you could still have NIL in the sport, but a school shouldn't be able to lure away a player with a bag and have them play the same year.
