Who are the ideal D-Co candidates? Heupel should make a move.

Banks is not going anywhere anytime soon unless he takes a HC job somewhere.

People need to understand, that aside from the rush defense being so bad, this is generally the defense you're going to see under Heup. A defense that focuses more on generating turnovers and will bend but not break.

It's the sort of defense we were told to expect when Heup came here. And aside from 2024, when the offense was completely different, this is the defense we have largely had every year.

Focus on DT and DB in the portal. Maybe a LB if Arion Carter leaves for the draft (unlikely, imo).

If Banks is encouraged to take a job why not give Jim Knowles a call?
That would be awesome but seems like a pipe dream. It might be that the next PSU head coach tries to retain him.

My wish list, if Banks were to accept a HC gig (may it be so) would be:

1. Knowles
2. Derek Mason
3. Blake Baker

Knowles, Baker, Durkin would be my first calls.

Likely Banks will be back though. Whole defensive staff is getting long in the tooth so wouldn’t surprise me if some changes happened this offseason.

Do we have a GM even? Austin Thomas is from Tennessee, just sitting at LSU currently. I would find him a job if he were interested sooner rather than later

Those 3 are all good. Would be great. How about adding Kevin Steele to that last ? He’s good enough for Saban to hire him twice, he’s a Tennessee guy. Don’t know if he’s still in the game or not, but could do worse.

There are no DC candidates because there is not an opening for DC in our program. There may be in the future but there isn't right now.

Talking about coaching candidates when there isn't an opening is an a waste of effort.
We’ve never solved any world problems on here. What ifs and wouldve/couldve is the whole premise of a board.

I unfortunately agree with this. The scheme Heupel runs just isn’t meant to play into complimentary football.

The defense will always be on the field way too much. It’s one of the reasons I’m not huge on Heupel. Can he win 8-10 a year with this layout? Sure. Will we ever have complimentary football, which it takes to win championships? Likely not.

I think Billy High is the unofficial GM.

Here’s the issue, Banks signed a 3 yr deal for damn good $ prior to this season. He’s not getting another offer for more money or 3 years anywhere else.

Second, expect Tennessee to spend big money in the portal for defensive players. DL, a LBer or 2 & especially DBs.

Banks most likely ain’t going anywhere….. unfortunately & DW sure ain’t giving him $4 mil NOT to coach.

Banks is a solid recruiter but not a great execution guy. Our defense has been playing FAR beneath our talent level. I know it’s young—but who would be an ideal candidate?
Nobody complained about Banks last year. When this defense carried the Vols. It is college football. You lost a ton of talent on defense from last year. Then you lose two DBs who were going to start. You can only work with what you have. The Vols are playing a lot of young guys. They are going to make mistakes.
