Oxford: Are we going to see "couch burning" again?

I understand that Ole Miss is trying to avoid being at the back of the line on what is turning out to be a crazy coaching carousel. However, giving a coach with multiple options an ultimatum is a risky move. If I'm Kiffin, I bail based on that premise alone, but that's just me.

There’s nobody bigger than the program. It was the right move to give him an ultimatum. He’s been flirting with UF and LSU. Everybody knows it including the team.

Not to mention this is one of their best seasons ever and by far their best season in the modern era, on the cusp of their first playoff and he's doing this. It's a major distraction.

If a player was pulling this right now they'd be crucified, but because it's Kiffin I guess everyone shrugs.

Perhaps if he did not have a history of departing from teams at the worst possible time, then Ole Miss would not have felt the need to make such a move

Lane has nobody to blame but himself for that

Players and coaches ARE likely negotiating their next move, like Nico contacting Oregon, and you hear nothing about it because they're discrete.

Lane Kiffin, if he had any class like even Saban did, would be keeping it low key, saying "I'm the coach at Ole Miss," etc like coaches before him have done while the negotiations go on behind the curtain. The media can speculate but you say nothing but "I'm coaching here" one day and "I'm gone" the next day.

Kiffin isn't breaking any rules that I know of by creating a hiring circus.

At this point the NCAA has put college athletics on autopilot and isn't doing anything but waiting on the crash and burn.

It is broken. Not surprisingly, the NFL and other pro leagues have rules about contacting coaches which prevent this kind of BS.

When will the big revenue sports finally stop the charade and realize there's too much money at stake to keep running big-time college revenue sports like we're still in 1950?

I’m probably wrong, but I still think he’s using this to finalize negotiations with Ole Miss and will then leave for NFL when Miami/Dallas/LAC/LAR comes open.

Hmmm. What if Ole Miss and Kiffin are playing 4D chess here? What if Lane isn't serious about leaving and everyone in Oxford knows it?

By dangling himself in front of LSU and FL, he's slowing their coaching searches by keeping them from going all in elsewhere searching for a coach. Anyone else they contact is going to think "I'm just the failsafe if Lane doesn't come because it's clear they're talking to him."

If Kiffin pulls a Lucy and jerks the ball away, LSU and FL are left with having to ramp up a search for someone else which leaves LSU and FL still floundering.

Who benefits from LSU and FL being "Lucyed" by Lane Kiffin? One of the winners is Ole Miss.

Exactly, they're going to have to put in some guardrails. I know nobody wants actual "Free agency" in the college ranks but they need something to govern all this.

You’re over thinking this way too much.

They’re in the playoff. I think the sec title game is still a possibility.

there is no need to play 4D chess or put anyone, particularly ole miss people, through this to “Lucy” two schools, one of which is 3-7 and rotates off your schedule.

The simplest explanation is usually correct. He is choosing not to sign a contract with Ole Miss when he can demand whatever he wants and they’ll give it to him.

Conclusion: he doesn’t want to be at Ole Miss

Unfortunately, after repeatedly being told they cannot regulate college athletics, the NCAA isn't really in a position to put up guardrails.

It really is all on autopilot until the "players are employees" lawsuits start to be decided and the schools have to decide if they REALLY want to be in the pro sports business.

They’re in the playoff for now. If they lose in Starkville next Friday, they’re on the fence.

Lane Kiffin could've left Ole Miss repeatedly and hasn't. I'll grant you he has not created a circus like this before but LSU and UF being open at the same time is a unique event.

I reject that we know Kiffin doesn't have an agreement with Ole Miss. We know VERY VERY little about coaching contracts and when they are signed. We know when it is RELEASED by the school that they've signed but short of an FOIA request, Lane may or may not have an agreement to sign or have signed with Ole Miss.

The report of an ultimatum, now denied by Kiffin, is an example that we don't have the slightest clue of his contract status. This could all be just Lane trolling everyone while those in the know at Oxford laugh at the rest of the SEC.

Lane Kiffin is the biggest troll in sports. If he's trolling LSU and FL, who would be surprised?

Do you think Ole Miss is happy with any of this?

Do you think they want him to sign an extension, get back to work and end all of this?

Do you really think they want all of this swirling around during their greatest season ever so he can troll people?

If he wants to troll people, he can use twitter

He does use Twitter apparently. Often and well, I'm told.

Kiffin is likely working. Reports were about his family touring towns, not him. He could be fired for cause if he's not coaching Ole Miss. He's probably going all to meetings, practices, etc like always.

He did McAfee (I haven't watched it) but that's not unusual for SEC coaches in the hunt at this point in the season. He's coaching.

While Sexton may be throwing all manner of crumbs to the media, that's kind of his job to "gin up" his client when openings occur.

Does Ole Miss wish Kiffin sucked as a coach and wasn't wanted? No.

What do you think Kiffin HIMSELF should do right now that he's not doing?

Yep, Ole Miss is getting a big dose of the selfish a—-hole that we all know and love. He may stay but can you trust him going forward?

Say he’s not going anywhere and sign an extension

Lane is a dirtbag punk. End of Story. I said this when he was hired. I said we just have traded a VFL and a Natty coach for a punk. And there are people who would take him back at Tennessee.

Pretty clear Ole Miss is working to protect their investment into the program and Lane needs to be honest about his future.

That's not what is best nutritionally for Lane and his family at this point. His family will eat better if he and Sexton can maximize his earnings. Sexton will eat better also. Obviously, implied blue font, but increasing one's salary via negotiation and playing one team against the other is hardly something Lane Kiffin or Jimmy Sexton invented.

And if I were Kiffin, I'd do it also because Ole Miss would fire him in a second if they thought it was best for them. Goose, meet gander.

This is where we disagree. I don’t think he has to do any of this to get the deal he wants from Ole Miss.

He can tell Ole Miss exactly what he wants today, including a key to every sorority house on campus and they’d give it to him.

He does not need to mess around with Florida or LSU to gain leverage. He has all the leverage any coach could dream of.

All he has to do is say, I want “x”, ole miss will tell lane “no problem”., and we’d have a deal
