UCLA didn't just start to be a villain in my book (sketchbook, that is)

I have been posting old "That's Jake" cartoons on Substack, which had me looking through old files. Along the way, I pulled out some sketchbooks that go way back. Way before anybody ever heard of Nico, or even before his parents had considered him, or maybe even before they were around, I did this salute to UCLA. Notice only one deck on student side, open end zone. Has to be around 1968 when I first enrolled.

To me the biggest painful but stage setting game vs UCLA was in 1985. Was a junior in upper deck b/c couldn't get student tix, and super frustrating game where TRob went off but UCLA scored two TDs w/ 2 point conversions (16 points) in five minutes to tie the game. BUT, the next game was vs Bo's #1 Auburn...and we all know what a magical day that was.

That was my first Vols game! I remember someone draped a banner on an overpass around Crossville that said, "UCLA one more reason to hate California."

I think the UCLA and Notre Dame series along with that 1980 schedule that included USC and Pitt probably did more for UT's national identity than anything else. We recruit better and receive more national attention when we play those type of schedules.

Yes, that was the way the stadium looked before 1972 with only the double decks covering the sidelines and the north end zone was only bleachers.

Expanding this story. We played UCLA in Memphis in 1965. Brutal game that we won and the coach of UCLA Tommy Protho said we made him ashamed to be a Southerner. We played UCLA in LA Colisuem in 1967, lost to Gary Beban, Heisman winner,....our only regular season loss. In 1968, this sketch, we beat them badly and I recall a UCLA player had a broken neck.
I was at that game
