New Kicker?

I like Max. Did he cost a couple games, yeah probably, but we shouldn’t put it all on him. Could we have played better D, scored a few more points.

He’s a kid and I would be willing to bet that if Ekler would have still been here, he would have had the kid in the mental state to be ready for those kicks. He looked scared to death and kicked like it.

Special teams coordinator needs to have him ready when that time comes again. He’s been pretty good outside those few kicks.

If I remember correctly, the broadcast crew said that the Georgia game was the first occasion in which circumstances called upon him to attempt a game-winning field goal. 'tis most unfortunate that he failed to convert, but we simply didn't have a placekicker then who was experienced in that scenario.

His job is to kick field goals and he failed to make one he should have made. It cost us the game against one of the top seeds in the country He missed another makable field goal and flirted with missing a couple of extra points I would like to see completion during the off season to make st we have our most accurate kicker kicking for us next season. If is our best, he is the guy.

The blame for losing to Georgia can laid at the feet of a host of players but mostly it's on the coach. Making a field goal from that distance is never a guarantee. I've seen plenty of NFL kickers miss from that distance and less. He's got plenty of leg. IMHO he will have learned a lot from that miss and should be better next year.

Agree, if we stop the 4th down TD pass or the 2 pt conv. game over. The missed FG was our 3rd opportunity to win

Max didn’t “lose” the Georgia game, he failed to win it. Sounds like semantics but there is a difference. We were tied when he missed the kick and could have won it in OT. Max gave us the lead in OT with a kick from almost the same spot. The defense failed to hold it.

There were many failures in the game. Most notably, the TD on 4th down, the 2 point conversion (where there was a total bust on D on the play), the offense only gaining 1 yard in OT and the defense getting immediately gashed after the FG in OT and ultimately giving up the winning TD. Max (and the FG unit) was one of the few people to actually DO his job in OT. Yes, you can say his miss put us there. But all the blunders BEFORE (clock management and false start too) his miss put him there. It’s a team game and the team lost that game.

I trust CJH and the coaches that he was our best option this year. If they feel the position needs to be upgraded (like Defensive Coordinator), I trust them to go get someone better. Or get a sports psychologist to get Max better prepared to face that situation if it ever comes up again.

It was 42 yards. Should be almost guaranteed. Yes, on occasion NFL kickers miss from that distance. They usually don't last too long if they do it more than once, plus a 55 yd kick is nothing for most NFL kickers

I can agree with that. No problem with some competition. Gives you an edge that you have to maintain.

Do you think that the holder having the ball tilted to the right had anything to do with the wide right?
I was a punter/holder in college. With soccer style kicking, you have to lean the ball away from the kicker to counteract the natural hook spin. Some high level kickers want the ball to be slightly forward to bring the sweet spot up a bit. I held for the kicker from FSU in a camp session back in the day and he wanted me to also press the ball down.
