Heupel's offensive rankings through year 5

Thought it would be interesting to see how Heupel's offense has stacked up in his first 5 years at Tennessee. The following cumulative stats are for the top 10 schools for 2021-2025 in points per game and yards per game (very small, non-impactful rounding errors may be present):

I am sure there are those who want to throw out the stats against cupcake teams and only use games against top 25 teams or just SEC teams, but this is some pretty good stuff.

You're right. Probably so, but Georgia, Alabama and Ole Miss play cupcakes too - and UT is ahead of all 3.

Agree. Everybody plays cupcakes and SEC is tougher than most. Let’s see if he averages 38+ next year with only 2 cupcakes. Then we will know more

When they are on a roll, Heupel’s offense is truly fun to watch. Sometimes, especially this year, the offense wilted in pressure situations. We all know the obvious ones, but there were other cases like the D getting a turnover but the offense going 3 and out. It seems like we frequently have trouble manufacturing something when we have to have it. It’s the biggest thing I hope they can improve next year.

OOC games do indeed impact it somewhat. Excluding Texas and Oklahoma (only two years in the SEC), and excluding the SECCGs to keep all teams at 40 games played yields:

Average Points per game in SEC games only (2021-2025)

Georgia- 35.3

Alabama- 33.1

Tennessee- 32.4

Ole Miss- 30.3

Texas A&M- 28.6

LSU- 28.0

Florida- 26.1

Arkansas- 25.8

Missouri- 25.2

South Carolina- 23.9

Miss State- 22.7

Auburn- 21.4

Kentucky- 20.8

Vandy- 20.1

BTW, in the 23 SEC games that Hooker or Aguilar started, Tennessee averaged 36.7 ppg. In the 17 SEC games that Milton and Nico started, Tennessee averaged 26.5 ppg.

When you think about what cjh has had to deal with on offense since he got here, that is an amazing stat. He's had no stability a quarterback since he got here. He started with Milton, who got replaced by hooker. Then the next season hooker started and got hurt and the season had to be finished by Milton. Then Nico starts for 1 year and is gone. Then we bring in JA for a year. Roll that in with the transfer portal losses and losing his offensive coordinator.
