Rawls played in seven games in 2025, totaling 40 tackles, two tackles for loss, an interception and a forced fumble for the ‘Noles, who struggled to a 5-7 finish. However, he missed the team’s final four games of the season due to injury but was still one of their most productive players.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder also appeared in 11 games as a redshirt freshman in 2024. As a reserve, he finished with 14 tackles and a career-best seven takedowns in FSU’s victory over Charleston Southern.

He will have two years of eligibility remaining at his next school. - On3

FSU transfer Ja’Bril Rawls is someone we could see Tennessee taking a look at. Tennessee is looking for depth and playmakers in the secondary. The ability to find versatile players is important.

Great depth piece/upside guy. This is how you fix our defensive backfield. You need 4 guys minimum.
4 DBs from the transfer portal?
We signed some pretty talented guys HS.

They wouldn’t need to be baptized by fire like Redmond was because he’ll be back.

But we absolutely do need 2 safeties imo.

Yes, you need three safeties and a corner.
It wouldn’t be the worst idea. Ideally you want the guys you recruited to take a step forward.
We won a big huge recruiting battle with Merrit against Miami last year.

Now we’re trying to recruit DBs that didn’t have his offers, but played last 2 years and suddenly this board thinks they have more value.

McCoy and Hood honestly seemed better coached off the bus than what we had here already. Not taking a swipe at Martinez but also how lucky can we continue to be finding NFL CBs fresh out of the portal?

We definitely need safeties but also if Edrees Farooq went out into the portal he would be one of the higher prospects just based off his production. But he’s here already. 3 safeties is what Jim uses but idk…if you get 3 from out of the portal that kind of seems like he has no faith at in what is already here.

I’m not a statistician, but those stats in four games…? Looks like a playmaker to me. Probably not the pure talent McCoy was, but experience is valuable and if he pushes the presumed starters in Gibson and Redmond, or outright wins the job, hallelujahpraisethelord!

Better coached or just more talented?

Both.

And we can't assume we'll always be that lucky in the portal.

We spend years recruiting the kids out of HS so we need to hit there most of the time.

We have 3 starting safetys in the new defense, I think if you grabbed 3 safetys it sends the wrong message to the guys already on the team,
However you need 2 guys out of the portal and the you need to trust Knowles to coach up Walton, Merritt, Combay, Wyatt
