Really thought the ex Utah coach was done. Would be a strange hire at 66 years old when they could’ve had him the whole time.

But he’s a good guy- and stable…. Michigan is desperate for stability and good people.

This would be a stable hire that would have the same type of philosophy that Harbaugh brought to Michigan. It would be a good gap hire for 2-3 years

Maybe there really was something to the "he didn't like the private equity deal at Utah." Then again he's going to a school in a conference that is discussing selling part of their media rights to an investor.
Either way, this is about the best scenario Michigan could have hoped for if they land KW.

Believe Michigan had made it clear they did not support the move by the B10 didn't they?

At root, I believe Whittingham is a good coach. I kinda put him in the Johnny Majors category though-it is gonna take him a few years to get things rolling. Johnny was an alumni and a NC coach so he had a leash in Knoxville that extended to the Virginia line for about a decade.

Michigan-or their alumni will eat Whittingham alive if he doesn't win big in the next few years.

As he is 66 now, I'm just not so sure KW is much more than a placeholder for a few years

This reminds me of us hiring Rick Barnes , many of our fans myself included thought Barnes was too old to start over at 61 and just looking to cash out his remaining coaching career on cruise control, so glad i was wrong. iWittingham is older at 66 but i think he would be a good hire for Michigan to steady the ship and win some games. He’s a darn good coach.

They did, along with Southern Cal. Although the Big Ten is not going to turn that down if 2 out of 16 schools oppose it.

I absolute hate the hire, because it's a great hire for Michigan. They don't deserve to fall into getting a coach like him after how that athletic program has been run over the last several years.

Fun fact: he was a finalist for the job I think after Fulmer was fired. Mike Hamilton blew him off and when Kiffin left wouldn’t respond to us, much like Gary Patterson.
I don’t remember him as a candidate in 2009…that was Patterson. I don’t think he got an interview in the search that netted us Dooley.

I'm not so sure USC (along with UCLA, oregon, and Washington) had any say in the matter. When they joined wasn't there some clause that they would not be considered "full members" for like 5 years or something?

If you remove the 4 newbies, the "B10" is basically just Michigan and tOSU anyway. Who really gives a crap what Rutgers wants?

This is a good short-term hire due to the type of character Whittingham is. He'll work coaching wise as well because he's going to win a lot of games.

He was never a finalist. The only time Tennessee reached out was in 2010 after Kiffin bolted, and he politely declined. His candidacy never even made to the interview stage. The coaching search after Fulmer was fired was Kiffin, Patterson, Brian Kelly, and Troy Calhoun.

Ugh. You really had to list those 4 names didn't you lol. Talk about a failed coaching search. At that particular point, we could have gotten pretty much anybody if we opened up the purse strings. With the benefit of 15 years of hindsight, none of our 4 "finalists" should have ever been anywhere near UT football.
