The Vols should bring in an experienced backup QB and let George and Faison compete for QB1.

1. To bring in a talented QB for a one year gig will cost plenty of NIL funds that can be better used on obvious defensive needs, specifically the interior front and safety. Do they really want to pay big NIL money to 3 QB;s?
2. The rest of the offense will be very experienced; at least 4 starters returning on the OL, with experienced talent in reserve; a great experienced WR room; 2 TE's with experience and a RB room headed up by a 4 year warrior. That's plenty of experience to carry a talented first year starting QB.
3. 2027 projects as The Year. All the elements should be in place. Do the Vols want to enter '27 with an inexperienced QB?
4. This is not throwing in the towel on 2026. There are freshmen all over the place showing out. And George and Faison are definitely talented. How much fun would it be watching them battle it out? Both could have ample opportunity and it's unlikely both will be around in 2027 so let the best man win.

For these reasons, I believe it would be a strategic mistake to pursue some one year QB solution. And that the Vols should go after a mature backup who will provide experienced leadership in the QB room. And allow George and Faison to compete and grow.

The problem with your scenario is most QB’s are entering the portal because they aren’t starting at their current school. If CJH wanted a back-up it would have been best to offer Merk a raise to stay.

Like it or not if CJH goes to the portal for a QB it will be for a starting QB.

I believe GMac is up to his desired weight that the school, his parents and he wanted. I think it’s time to give him his shot. I actually hope he plays the entire second half in the bowl game.
Anxious to see what he can do with the ones as well

Bringing in a proven superstar D1 QB isn't a competition. Neither Faison nor Mac is going to beat out a proven winner. Call the spade a spade. If we want a proven superstar, just do it. You're going to lose either Mac or Faison when you do it. Possibly both. So be it. I would much, much rather have a proven QB getting the NIL money over an unproven high school grad. IMHO, we could never recruit another HS QB again and come out in a better position. The probability of a proven quarterback at another college can duplicate his success at Tennessee is much higher than the probability of a five-star quarterback coming to the team and performing at the same level or better.

Who would be the 3rd quarterback to play Tues, if something happens to Joey and Mac. Just curious, one could pull a muscle and another get the wind knocked out of him, or just lose a helmet. I assume wildcat the remainder of the game.

If you're gonna go with G Mac or Brandon next year I would start him in the bowl game

Too much logic here for this to be done. It seems that in the college world now days it "throw more money at it"!!

It’s difficult to bring in an experienced QB and tell him he is just gonna be the backup.

I’d recruit some high ranked high upside 3star that I could probably coach up for cheap, lot cheaper than a 5* QB that’s gonna sit and may leave after their first year starting. Otherwise I’m grabbing experience.
Other 5* skill positions yeah I’d still recruit because they tend to get rotated in and out during the season. You hardly ever see a two QB system. Only reason we saw Arch running the ball on plays behind Ewers was just because his name was Manning

They didn’t think he could even be a back up. They told him to look elsewhere.

I tend to agree with this. Why? Because GMac could not beat out Merk to be #2 this past season. If Faison is anywhere close to his star ranking he'll be starting in 2027. To be the most effective and efficient in Heupel's offense the QB must be an effective runner for 4 or 5 carries a game≥ See Hooker when he tucked it and ran.

Merk was a high 4 star
Mac was a 5 star.

Do that and we lose 6 games
