Now that the bowl game is over and the Portal opening this weekend… these next 2-3 days we will expect to see defensive staff changes.

Allowing Jim Knowles to put his fingerprints on this defense.

Anyone have quotes from article

He has done nothing to keep his job.
He’s earned the right to survive one bad year IF there’s reason to think this was just one bad year. idk enough about it to have a opinion but i do know the DL, specifically the DTs, were terrible in 2025 and got worse as the season progressed. Not sure if it’s just youth or what but our DL was bad

That’s fair. He has just been on the don’t touch list for fans for awhile but this year was embarrassing.

The DL has sucked all year
So 1 bad yr from the DTs, and you want to fire Rodney Garner? You guys are brain dead. RG has a track record. Just last year we had one of the best DL in CFB. It's not like we have the same players. Players develop at different rates, sometimes you never know what you have until the light comes on. That's why you recruit over certain spots after a year. Apparently the rotation/players last year were better than the rotation/players this year. OT/ ONL/ ES was what made that line rock last year. You guys need to leave the staff management to the pros. You can do your personal staff changes on your PS5.

I like Garner and his sample size of success will keep him on staff imo. However, what happened this yr ? Last yr vs Ohio st? We got destroyed in the trenches this yr and in the games we lost in 2024.
Ohio State? Ohio State was great last year. Yall act like they were a 1 win team. Please stop using Ohio State as the litmus test.

Soft mentality with low IQ play getting multiple 15 yard penalties.

Last year was the best DL we've had in years....No way should it have been on roller skates all night against OSU...I don't care how good OSU was. It made our defensive line with Chavis that Nebraska went through like $hit through a goose look good.

I wonder how much the DL play this year can be tied to coach chop as well. As he coaches the edges.

Either way. I’m still in on Garner. He has too much of a reputation as a good coach in SEC and recruiting ability.. I think he being paired with Jim Knowles who is an old school physicality hard practice, tough mentality. I think they align well, and will see an improvement on DL but need to hit portal.

Outside of him I’m fine if all the others are replaced on defense

We need some coaches that display some fire and can coach some motivation and passion into our play. But it comes down to there are no shortcuts, we have to get players that can and will compete in this league and we have to have coaches that won’t accept not putting in the work and effort it takes to achieve it. We have to practice how we want to play. You got to practice being physical if you want to be physical. You have to workout if you want to get bigger and stronger. Our defense is being dictated too. Our secondary cannot cover molasses and it’s pitiful and not acceptable no matter how that it evolved to this. This team is young but from this point forward that is not an excuse, this team has a very talented group of freshman and sophmores that are getting ready to be sophmore and juniors. It’s time to put on the work and that goes for all. The staff and players have to be motivated, good grief this place has everything a player should want a big fan base and great atmosphere. It has long time deserved a team and staff that was driven to win and won’t back down and cower when it’s time to play the big boys. Yes Mr Heupel it’s time to turn it around and build a consistent tireless relentless squad that fights and wins the tough battles. Not playing scared and trying to hang on. Not blowing big leads trying to salt the game away. Not being dictated too and playing like scared robots in the secondary. By coaching up the talent and putting the top talent on the field. As fans we can handle losing now and then, nobody wins them all. But we want teams that play to win not play not to lose. We have seen enough of that to last a lifetime. We want teams that play smart but play with fire and passion and expect to win and demand the best out of each other. We’re 5 years in and things have gotten better, but at this point we don’t need to see any further downturn. Recruiting has soared the last 2 years even better and we were light on seniors this past year. But it’s time for leaders to emerge and for priorities to demand championship contending results. No more excuses, we need to see results and we need to see a sense of general urgency with everyone inside and around the program. GBO

He’s had 2 DTs drafted in 5 seasons. One was a transfer in Lott and Butler who he had for one year.

They did it to everyone. You all have to join the rest of the world in 2025. There are great teams in other conferences. The SEC did not invent football. Once you accept that, you won't crash out everytime TN loses.
