Am I the only one who heard the comment from the announcer ....

that the defensive staff for Illinois told them UT's offense was predictable due to how the tight ends are being used? Could this be why we often find our offense disappears in the second half of games?

What say you?
I heard that same comment.
Heupel must start changing up the play calls.
Our offense becomes predictable...run on 1st and 2nd because the TE is lined up as a blocker, then pray for conversion on 3rd.

Defenses catch on in the 1st half and make adjustments and our Offense never changes things up.

Then how does the offense ever have success?
Good question. I do not know the answer to it… maybe it is successful When our athletes are better than yours. So it is talent winning over scheme…idk, just something I heard about TEs and play calling.

Yep, I heard the same thing. Amazing if true. An Illinois sure made it look like they had it figured out.

So Heupel has had better athletes than the entire country for most of his tenure?

There's an obvious answer to the question and it's not that we're out-talenting teams

maybe the lack of use of the tight ends because they were open all night in the middle of the field

Funny that they would say that out loud. But, everyone probably knew but our coaches. We’re like a team that runs out on the field to start the half with three feet of toilet paper hanging from the back of our pants.

Tennessees offense is predictable because it’s run, run, deep ball, repeat. When the other team plays two high safeties and is able to limit the run game our offensive minds have no idea how to overcome it.

Rarely do we ever use screen passes, slants, or wheel routes to the HB. You’d also think that when your semi mobile qb is getting clobbered in the pocket you’d start rolling him out a little as well. I mean, heck, Vandy blitzed us like crazy and we maybe ran a screen pass once the entire game.

I don’t know enough to for sure tell how much the tight end alignment gives away the play,

What I do know is that overall, counting every game we played this year, our offense was adequate enough, even with a journeyman QB. If we would have had just a marginal defense this year, we may have made the playoffs. The best team, by far, that we played, UGA, we beat everywhere but the final score. Granted, we may not have made it past the 1st round, but it would surely be better than playing in the music city bowl.

I don’t care where the tell tell signs are with Jhs offense, the bottom line is if he has an adequate QB who understands it, it’s hard to stop. Last night, they played 2 deep to shorten the game because they knew our defense was trash and they could sustain long, time consuming drives, they were willing to give us a TD or even better, hold us to a FG try with a kicker who has been a head case all year as long as it took 8-10-12 plays for us to get in that position.

Give us a decent to really good defense with a QB who can manage the playbook and throw a decent long ball, who knows, it sure would make opposing teams play us more honest.

Then how does the offense ever have success?
Because they occasionally call a a game with variety and multiple personnel with change in tempo. They mix it up.

Then they just get lazy…
Also we play a lot of cupcakes.

21 against Illinois.
3 in the 2nd half vs Vandy
2 - 3 and puts and a turnover on downs in the 2nd half vs OU

I would argue that it’s not only being predictable, but it’s our lack of adaptability and adjusting on both offense and defense that allows any team with a pulse to beat us. Being able to adjust and adapt keeps you unpredictable…something we are not! Heupel has not demonstrated the ability to adjust, adapt, or make in-game managerial decisions at all since he has been here. If plan A doesn’t work, well heck, let’s run it up the A gap, smh! He, and our well paid coaches, have to figure this out!

Take away the deep ball from this offense, which they did then they struggle. Hurry Aguilar, which they did and he's prone to make a mistake. They just watched the film and did what everyone else did to stop Tennessee, make them drive the field. Tennessee more times than not wasted a few possessions or turned it over. Without the threat of the deep ball this offense just isn't as potent and prone to mistakes.. Defense didn't help by not getting any stops. Puts even more pressure on the offense to be perfect because you can't waste possessions..
