It seems that all coaches have their “system” or “strategy” whether it’s offense or defense. You always here “coach A runs this kind of offense” or “coach B” uses kind of defense”. Likewise, I hear so and so player isn’t a good match / or right fit for Coach A/B’s offense / defense. It seems like most coaches live or die with their “system” and are not willing to tweak it or change it based on the current strengths and weaknesses of their roster. Just curious, are there any coaches who are talented enough to completely change their scheme if their roster is better suited for it?

What if there is an exceptional athlete, QB, WR, etc that isn’t used to playing in your system, but with a few tweaks, they would thrive. What if you are a new coach who “inherited” a roster that doesn’t perfectly match their system?

I’d say if you were a coach who has Bo Jackson or Herschel Walker, you are going to change whatever you need to. Great example of Butch Jones is that he had Alvin Kamara sitting on the bench.

Another example would be Knowles. He had his system and it allegedly takes a few years to master. Is he willing to tweak some things with current players to strive for success or is his way the ONLY way he knows how to coach. It’s all or nothing and you just have to wait for it’s implementation?

Tweaking I could understand. But if you’ve been running a certain scheme and you’ve been in the profession for a long time. Apparently it’s been working if your staying employed and getting big time jobs.

Coaches generally have a scheme and are trying to build an identity. The good ones change elements to fit personnel. Heupel has done that going from primarily 10/11 personnel in years past to 12 personnel when he has 2-3 good TEs. He added condensed formations and normal splits to attack the middle of the field. My only thing is I think we need to get back to pushing the tempo, stacking WRs more like we did in '21/'22 but we need a seasoned QB who has a full offseason to learn.
