Watching Texas Tech and Oregon play now, both have exceptional defense. Last night, same thing.

We took the first step, new DC, if we don’t go all out in the portal for defensive players, next year won’t be much different. I have to say I’m impressed with what Texas Tech has done in a short time on defense.

Au contraire. If this team rolls out a similar defense to this year, there will be a much, much different record at seasons end.

Dylan Simpson and the defense is why we were in the playoffs in 2024. All the experts said we had too many holes on the defense. We simply didn’t fill those gaps.

Losing McCoy and then Gibson put our defensive secondary on life support. And then it became more and more apparent with each passing game that we had forgotten how to tackle.

Just as bad, our offense did the usual disappearing act for key stretches of games all season long.

Lots went poorly for us in 2025.

The obvious thing to me is that it’s a huge benefit for the teams who get a first round home game against a weaker foe to warm up. The teams who earn byes are spending four weeks off (one more than the first round winners) and coming into their neutral site playoff games cold as ice.

Our defense had MUCH bigger issues then just McCoy and Gibson!! Lack of talent for sure. Now was this due to poor recruiting of the right players or poor player development ?

Probably a bit of both. Oh and I forgot the defensive scheme probably not the best either. This poor defensive play was noticed at the start of the year and never got better.

Well, it was Heupels choice to just dip his toes in the portal waters instead of diving in. He rolled with his roster/recruits and paid the price. Let's see if he's learned anything.

But have they mastered the devastating thud technique?
🤣 These kids get in a serious weight program and lift a little, start hitting gains and think they can just run into other athletes so hard they crumble before them, lmao!
Them kids on the other side been lifting too, fellas (some of them moreso) 🤭

- Drive for show; putt for dough.
- Never eat at a place called "Mom's.
- Never play poker with a guy called "Pops".
- Don't eat yellow snow.
- Defense wins championships.

How strange that I was thinking the same thing and it made me wonder , CJH and his coaching staff came on board around the time Georgia and Bama were dominating the SEC esp' with good defense. They had to see first hand that a good defense is key to winning a NC, yet we only seem to get average defensive players at best . So my question is , did they just not take defense serious ? or just couldn't get good players cause they all went to Georgia and Bama ? To be fair, I think part of the problem has been coaches and defense strategies as much as average talent

Yes, I agree with your analysis.

Seems like last years Vols and this year Oklahoma teams were similar in many ways. Sure, Oklahoma did not get blown out in the first round like we did, but Oklahoma wasn’t playing Ohio State either.
