Indiana quickly put together a great team, relying heavily on the portal and NIL deals. That would seem to require a different skill set from an administrative standpoint compared to the traditional recruiting model. Hopefully, we're up to the challenge but I'm not so sure.

Its less important than it use to be but still very important if you want to have a stable program year over year. Counting on 20+ transfers a year is a risky strategy. The successful ones get media coverage, but people rarely mention when a team goes all in on the portal and it doesnt work out.

West Virginia had to rebuilt their whole roster through the portal. Didn't work to well , they were 4-8. Auburn currently has 29 in the portal, we will find out Oct. 3rd how it works out.

Need to hit the portal Indiana-Miami-Ole Miss all have mainly built their Teams thru the Portal and Heupel better get on board because now that is the way to go!!!!
This. It will put pressure on other teams to follow suit or do the coaching carousel like a lot of them did this year. It's a what have you done for me lately culture now, and frankly these coaches are getting paid insane amounts of money to deliver now..

I have a feeling that Cignetti will be successful for a long time. Success like this will boost their HS recruiting too. The landscape today dictates that you have to balance HS recruiting and portal recruitment. And then develop what you get, as he and his staff have clearly demonstrated

I really do think you can do both. UGA is probably the best program in the country at recruiting high level and retaining majority of contributors...and then go get pieces to fill in. The "pay your dues and wait your turn" deal only works if guys pan out and develop. Think we're too far in that direction, and we've seen how teams like Ole Miss and IU have succeeded...but you look over at an LSU, for example, where they brought in a ton of guys, who, on paper put them in top tier playoff contention. So, it's a balancing act...but think we need to hit portal pretty darn hard, esp on defense.

Fair question.
And YES it absolutely matters.

You mentioned Indiana. I guarantee you you would have been pissed two years ago with the Cignetti and the players he brought over from JMU. And all the other transfer portal players.

Getting kids from HS allows us to build recruiting grounds that you can pluck talent from over and over again.Transfer portal is pure mercenary Wild West highest bidder. HS kids allows you to develop a team while getting impact players from the portal.

You need BOTH

I don't think that HS recruiting is ever going to go away. Although I can definitely see how the portal and NIL have basically opened up a free agency. Enough money and you can get whatever you need. You are able to get kids that are just more physical. They have been in a program or 3 at this point , and are much more polished. You get dudes that are ready to compete day 1.

It will be interesting to see how CJH hits the portal this year. Obviously on defense he has some major needs. We need some dudes that wanna play through contact. We played too much 2 hand touch this past year.

FSU did the same and won 2 games. The difference is Indiana looks like a perfect team out there.

With recruiting you have to develop players. And you never know. With the portal you already know what they are. If the Vols are going to keep up they better hit the portal hard. Next season is going to be tougher than this year.

If you can bring in guys that will stick around for three years or more, I think that will bring more consistant results than trying to pull talent from the portal every year.

The last 2 national champions were heavy on roster retention and using the portal where needed . I think the blue print for long term success should never exceed 25 to 30% of your roster being from the portal. For every Ole Miss there’s 5 FSU or Colorados . Indiana doesn’t even qualify for an explanation of what is happening. Cignetti is his own animal and no one understands what is happening.

I would say no.
Because you don’t know who’s going into the portal. While you know exactly who you are recruiting from HS.

Reaaaallllllyyyyyyyy? We know who we are recruiting from high schools?

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, may I present Boo Carter and Legend Bey.

I rest my case.

He will, indeed, but he turns 65 in June, so I doubt that a 10-year run, a la Saban, is in the cards for him.
