Are we handcuffed at qb position awaiting Joey Aguilar outcome?

I think next year will be rough. I wish we would go with what we have.
I wish we could find guys that are committed to getting better, sticking around, and let the youth get some reps.
We could sign them to good deal; but the plan is to play them early and get set for 2027.
Next year will be a blood bath unless we completely retool.
Spend the big money on young hungry guys that want to commit to the mission.

I know this is just a lot of whining; but I don't see how we can ever be consistently good if we don't get the young guys in and have them getting reps.
We can't just be the Kansas State of the 2000's and expect to keep out HS guys.

Because the young guys will hit the Portal!!! The days of recruiting HS players is about done

I guess the only solution is the NCAA breaks away from CFB and the CFB forms their own rules and regulations.
This current system will not survive. 25+ audience is what intoduces the youth to football.
If the 25+ crowd finds different hobbies, their kids will find different hobbies.
Look at MLB/NBA, both sports have fallen off significantly since 2010/2011.

This was discussed in a different thread, but YES...the longer this lawsuit thing lingers the worse off UT positions themselves.

I LOVE Joey A and everything he did for us last year, but Heupel needs to realize it was just that - one year. Whether hes eligible or not, you need to have a plan and it doesn't need to rely on Joey's status.

Situation reminds me of one one of the best GMs to ever work in the NFL - Bill Polian.
After he, Jim Irsay and the Colts parted ways, Bill was asked what went wrong.
His simple answer...I never had a plan past Peyton.

🤣🤣 That's an entirely different scenario

I don't think Heupel is counting on him being around
As a coach I don’t think you can count on any players staying 4+ years. Put the best on the field and try to sustain a good program. If you settle for a bridge player you run the risk of looking bad and players will not want to commit to begin with. The players you have waiting to play next year will take a bag from another team and leave as well. You have to play to win every year and every game or you will be replaced. There is very little honor in commitments and contracts these days and schools will listen to the fans and donors above everything else to make sure they keep a cash flow.

not sure why I selected your post. Not meant towards you.

We need an experienced QB next yr. Joey A if he happens to be eligible, best possible in the portal if he's not.
I would think Joey A's 2025 success is a great /product/image for this staff and program to sell to portal QBs and all portal players.

We got an experienced QB from the portal for 2025 and struggled to make the Music City Bowl which they lost to a poor Illinoise team. So where does experience lead while you bury you HS signees on the bench where they can get no experience. How many years do you have to sit on a bench and get no playing time to have experience?

No don't think they are handcuffed. Similar situation with Ty Simpson. The staff has to make an informed decision ASAP on their portal qb based on information available this week. Wish Joey the best as he has skills and too bad he is tied up in judicial indecision. Joey is also a phenomenal teammate and leader. He could be an asset to an NFL squad.

My speculation is that if Aguilar can't come back, Heupel takes a late portal QB and has a competition for starter. GMac could actually be the guy.

I'm also thinking Aguilar is going to get another year, but who knows

Most players don't care about the mission, just the next highest bidder for there services.

College sports has become ,buy us a team and win , hell coaches seem to enjoy it or they quit inviting portal players ,and letem sit or lose a yr. Highschool games getting more appealing to folks now.

But everyone rejoiced when the players "finally got their bag". Fans still clamor for someone to back up that money laden truck to get that special coach or player they just have to have or the cries of going cheap fill the board. Fans were thrilled when the portal gave players the freedom to move at will thinking the top names would flock to good ol' Rocky Top but "our" players would never dream of leaving Knoxville because as we all know UT is where everyone wants to be, right?

Well, it's pretty clear that this new reality isn't all that folks thought it would be when we signed good ol' Nico and family. They opened Pandoras box and it can't be closed. Not sure how much longer this game I grew up loving will survive unless some sanity, stability and controls are introduced into this mess. Sadly, I'm not sure there's an appetite to do that as long as the fans keep paying to support the game as it stands in any way, shape or form....and they know they've got us hooked deep. Eventually, the average fan will do as I've done and stop attending games and watch from home. That won't last long though. Mark it down....the day is coming when games will be PPV across the board.

Happy New Year and bah humbug sports fans!!
