It feels like CJH may need to approach quarterback playing time differently than he currently does. It seems wise to get your QB2 (or the QB with the most potential for the following year) as much playing time as possible to ensure you’re not going into the next year with minimal or no experience at the position. This might mean pulling your starter much earlier in games that are essentially guaranteed wins, and even strategically giving some meaningful series to the non-starter in losable games. Otherwise we’re going to be in and endless cycle of looking for a starting QB (or at least experience at the position) in the portal every year.

MacIntyre looked to have the most potential for next year, but who knows what he’s capable of - we saw next to nothing of him. With all the transfer movement that’s the new norm, your starter could be gone at any moment, even if he has eligibility left.

I think Heupel knew that our #2 was not the future, so he played Joey almost the whole time. Nothing to build for if you don’t have your next guy on your roster.

look at his history... he plays the # 1 guy deep into games and always has. After Hooker took over for Milton, Milton (who had experience) got very little reps in live games.. Just the way he has always done and I doubt it has anything to do with the #2s capabilities. jmo

Ive said this before.

IMO, He needs to quit just running it up to make things look good. Let the number 2 play some.

Then again, if he hasn’t at this point in his coaching career, he’s not about to just start doing it.

Agree. But we really haven't had a lot of games outside of the buy games, where we have had cushions. But yeah, he definitely should have gotten GMac out sooner against the chump teams, and should have given GMac the snaps he was giving Merkelenger.

I know there is a cost to back up qbs, but doesn't it help in the portal if your last QB had great stats? Seems like most of the successful teams are playing with transfer QBs.

Yes and it has generated interest. We just weren’t interested in paying the ask from a couple of these guys. Couldn’t get them down.

As the pool of QBs dries up in the portal, I think of those National Geographic shows where the ponds are drying up in the African desert and the competition for water gets more and more dangerous and brutal.

We don't want to end up in a bidding war for the last quality QB (Leavitt?) or frantically hoping Joey A gets another year or trying to repeat the "Heupel quick QB course" with another unknown upperclassman snatched from the portal at a late hour.

If they are able to get the ask, isn't it market price? I assume that the players entering the portal frees up NIL revenue....are we that far behind other schools financially that we can't compete for market price with top schools or are we just making poor investments? Somehow Indiana comes out of nowhere and is shaking the money tree to pay their coach 11.6 and built a championship team out of transfers. I know that is an anomaly, but it proves that a team doesn't have to have to be a traditional powerhouse to compete. Just frustrating to come out of a down year and not be able to pay for elite players....where are we deficient?

IMO Heupel gets concerned when having to pay some of these prices. What kind of headaches and demand from roster players if you drop 5 million on a QB? If you get a QB today for that, what keeps a couple WRs and OL and TEs from jumping in portal or demanding their 5 million? At some point you can’t pay everyone that.

And no, I don’t believe we have the pot to compete with several other programs. We don’t have anyone that will drop what Cuban drops into Indiana or for certain those Texas oil guys. And there are many others.

Can you imagine anyone connected with UT Athletics saying about not getting our share of media revenue "it's only a couple of hundred million...."
