I absolutely hate the state of college football now. It's making recruiting obsolete. No reason to get excited about recruits when u pay out the nose for a kid but since he's a freshman in the SEC he's not ready to play. So now most of our money is tied into a future that most of the kids aren't even going to be here after 2 years. So why even spend money on these kids when you can pour all of it into the portal and pay for actual starters and contributors? We just watched Vandy overhaul there entire roster through the portal and they kicked our teeth in.

If we do not go ALL IN(At least 11 to 15 guys) in the portal we won't win 8 games next year. As much of a joke as our defense was and the only talent we had will be playing on Sundays. Am I the only one who thinks us recruiting hs kids to sit and then paying 6 or 7 transfer to come in is not condusive to winning nowadays especially in the SEC. Our pockets are not as deep as people think apparently or we are saving money to spend on highly ranked ha kids to sit the bench then transfer out like we have been doing(stupid)?

I love this shallow group of people that want to skip HS recruiting all together haha.

if only the HS kids could skip magically into 2 years into the future for when they're portal ready.

Until then....lest just NOT recruit them

Lol.

I truly think a larger number of posters than we realize have been over indulging in "Grandpa's cough syrup" a bit much the last few weeks.

The posts on this board have gotten weirder and weirder the last ten days or so

Had one guy last night lecturing me about business principles and their relation to CFB. If CFB has taught us anything in the last ten years it is that it is no longer "the real world".

While I'm always up for a good laugh, some of these posts have grown from kinda amusing to more than a bit sad.

How do you think Miami and Ole Miss got to where they are? They recruited HS kids, developed them, retained them, and then filled in pieces with Transfers. That's what you're supposed to do. You developed and retain players. You all just don't have the patience. MC went 5-7, 7-6, 10-3, and then this year. To be in that position, and lot of stuff has to go right. Injuries and retaining players.

No that's not what I am saying at all. What I am saying is signing 7 kids a yr in the portal isn't going to cut it anymore. It's nice signing top 10.classes but how many of them are contributing day 1? Exactly. Also if they are contributing chances are we don't have much depth at said position. I just don't feel like we are even coming close to keeping up with middle of the road schools in the SEC when it comes to the portal. Vandy signed 24 last year in the portal, that's almost an entire recruiting class and they whipped our ass. After the kids we are losing to the NFL the cupboard is bare on defense and If we don't spend big then 8 wins may be our max next year l.

Ten days? I would state 10 years but, it’s been weird on here for almost two decades. Lol

Unlike the dissenters of your post trying to be argumentative, I understand your point OP. It’s just that to even be able to get those transfer kits, they have to start somewhere. I think after a few years, this NIL and transfer portal will even out and teams will have a mix of both transfers and HS kids who stick with their program out of high school.

If you’re Ohio State and Georgia who are stable and dont Have a high transfer rate out, I agree. The fact is, when you look at the playoff teams, over half were built through the portal. Ole Miss and Indiana are particularly portal heavy. Both example how quickly you can flip the results. Heupel is plodding along as if it’s 2001. But he’s still losing lots of players out. We certainly shouldn’t be signing the large number we did the last two years. Explains why Tennessee is coming out of the portal gates like a turtle.

Well said! College sports is run(ruined) by big money who could care less about the fans who love their school. Conference leaders, ESPN, NCAA and gamblers took it over and it’s ruined.
Stick a fork in it… it’s done.
NASCAR made over.

Or just not pay them more than they’re worth right now unless 3-4 year, binding contracts are allowed the NCAA. “Haha”

Sports Talk Jay did a video on this recently looking at HS recruiting and it has shifted. Look @ current teams in the football final four, esp Indiana. They are not wasting $ millions paying unproven 4-5 stars to sit then leave. Zero return on investment. Better to buy proven guys.

I would go for recruiting about 15 4* kids and filling in from the portal. If you do that, you better have the $$$$$ available to fill the holes.

So pay big money to HS players who haven’t played any SEC ball? You need to pay attention! Those days are almost gone. Train and pay them and u get zero benefit. Unless the portal is fixed this is what it looks like

A list had Indiana spending more than TN. Most of those players came from James Madison with the Coach, so there's a development factor too. Consistency in a program pays dividends.

I agree with this. Identify 10-15 high school kids that you really think you can develop quickly and can help you early on (minimum, starting as redshirt freshmen) and supplement the rest in the transfer portal. Its a new day. Signing classes of 25-30 kids out of high school is a recipe for losing now.

People are figuring it out. HS recruiting is not dead, but you are on to the reality. And the Vandy game is Exhibit A! I told my buddy at the game that it looks like we have all sorts of talented kids but VU has skilled men out there.

I won't be surprised (if legal) to see contracts written for freshmen with production / xfer clauses. Plus w changes coming so fast the market may move away in a couple of years almost demanding a transfer or renegotiation. Nico Iamaleava was a great example of this. When signed as a HS senior his contract was ridiculous such that certain coaches were calling it the end of CFB as we know it. But after 2 years on campus, he was literally out shopping to get himself market rate for an elite QB! (Caveat: he wasn't elite anymore, thus UT waved goodbye and everyone else looked away, and UCLA got him on clearance). But the point is in only 2 years an "elite" QB went from a market rate $2M to $4M. A 100% increase.
Who knows where it's going to find equilibrium, but it very well could create even more churn. We're currently at 31% nationwide I read recently. And to your point, this makes Freshmen payouts less attractive.

Seriously...this is so true....how much money do we have tied up in players that do not see the field? seems the better thing to do would be to go after So and Jr in portal who have played already and use the money there...we have only. had 1 year where a recruited QB was the starter.....and he left the following year.

That's good insight. Sucks for HS players in the future but teams are starting to figure out what you're saying. It makes no sense to pay any HS kid very much in NIL unless you project them to start right away.

If I were a coach, I would NEVER sign another HS QB. Why should you? None are truly "ready". Quite a few are busts. You can use the same money to get a proven commodity through the portal.
