that are in charge of both portal talent evaluation and dividing up the money so all our immediate needs are met this year.

I don’t know who’s specifically in charge of either area, but I sue pray they know what they’re doing. IMO, Huepel’s future at TN depends on it.

Pretty much every school in same boat...good and bad. Good is you can be zero to hero in one year by making the right moves that fits weakness...bad is you can make all the moves that look right on paper, but don't pan out for variety of reasons. Crazy that AP preseason #7, 10, 20, 21 are teams left standing. Hope JH realizes importance of trenches, DB's and rushing the football...these foundational parts give you the opportunity to succeed.

We need a seasoned GM, because Heupel can't do it.

Heupel is in a Playoffs or bust season coming up. His future at TN absolutely depends on it.

I'm afraid we won't spend the money in the right places though.

He will not be fired if he misses the 2026 playoffs
I hope not.
But he will have a 5th or 6th year QB.
2 All-SEC WRs
Big talented Oline
Ethan Davis and Desean Bishop

A defense combined with talented PSU transfers that know the system mixed with the core nucleus of a Tennessee defense that at one time led the nation in takeaways- FINALLY backed by depth and coached by Jim Knowles

That does not sound like a rebuild.

ultimately Josh and his coordinators make the call on the talent and Josh has the say on budget and payouts

there are staff that prepares film on HS and Portal for the staff to evaluate and there are staff that tracks expenses versus the budget. Feedback to Josh if a $ decison required.. I think they budget by position groups so its easy to track

Just my opinion

Did you watch any college football this year? LSU, UF, Penn St, wasted no time making the change this year. Heupel is in a similar situation going into next year.
Would you mind letting us know how many conference and national championships those teams have won since Tennessee won either?

Edit: I'll save you the time. 16.

That’s just another reason not to muck around if the program isn’t excelling. It’s been too long already since we’ve won a championship of any kind.

So what’s your level of confidence in them with the portal?

they are pursuing lot of players at different positons. Having a hard time, it seems, getting visits. If players don't come in on a visit, then you're likely not getting them. So far, no QBs have visited. Had several yesterday but it has started slowly. Watch the visits, that is where the portal adds will come from.

In year six, please explain to me a scenario where doesn't make the playoffs, but keeps his job.
Only risk is losing to Vandy again. That could make it dicey.

You're comparing this administration to others with the examples you made in this thread. I've seen zero indication that he is in hot water at this juncture.

Any school holding their coaches to a make playoffs or be fired is going to be paying buyouts frequently.

Exactly. The lack of visits has me really curious to what’s going on.

Obviously he’s the head coach, but I’m worried Heupel is taking something on that may be out of his area of expertise. You have any thoughts on that?

Its hard to know what the issues are with getting players here. Is it the newness of staff on the D side?? Is it the two 5 star QBs on the roster in getting QBs here? Is it the cost of the higher rated players?? is the roster budget not high enough to spend on quality?

IMO, with about 3 million invested in the QB room, they can't take an experienced QB as a starter for 5 million which is what the higher rated guys are asking / getting. So do you put 2-3 million in someone that might not even out perform your R/FR?? or FR?? hard call.

At the end of the day, I think they will get players in here. Its a question of quality of players they get... and it is early in the process yet. School starts on the 20th and drop/add fate is usually a week later. So basically they have until the end of the month to get players.

Fans are typically impatient and want to see something happen now. They snag a few commitments in the next few days, fan outlook changes.. :)

I like Fazion and am excited about him, but with the majority of teams in the playoffs having success with transfer QBs and the failed nico investment, why is the staff not looking to invest in transfer QB instead of a freshman that probably won't contribute in year 1, likely won't be championship caliber in year 2 and could transfer out at any time? Is the UT staff slow to adapt to the transfer portal era? When you combine the investment made in players that contribute little to none as freshmen and players that transfer before making meaningful contributions, it seems like a wiser investment to let another school train them for a year or 2 and get the best year or 2 for your money to me.
