We made the Top 10 - and ESPN hates us again

8-5 isn't a disaster but it wasn't good either. Not sure we belong in "epic failure" status this time.
Not all 8 win seasons are the same. Ours was the definition of how 8 wins is "bad". Not a single "good" win in the lot. Maybe Florida on the road just because of our pathetic history with them.

Exactly. This year was incredibly frustrating, but I’d put Auburn ahead of us, UNC ahead of us in terms of what needed to happen and how far expectations were from being met. I’ll say this, and I know people are tired of it, but we beat UGA with McCoy and Gibson playing . We probably beat them by 2 scores that day. Does that change the trajectory of the season? Maybe, we will never know, but we would’ve been different. That doesn’t excuse a lot of the other stuff that led to our demise though.

I get that we didn’t beat a team with a winning record and that sounds bad. It is bad.

The teams we lost to, 3 went to the playoffs and one was a bubble team that got left out. It’s not our fault the other 4 SEC teams we played sucked. Or that the Syracuse QB got hurt in week 3 and the wheels fell off.

We are upset that we were a FG away from beating UGA and let the OU game slip away.

Ark and Miss St let that happen to everyone they played.

I’m not defending the season as a success but it’s also not the Dooley, Jones, Pruitt eras of bad either.

I think it's a decent evaluation all around.
Concerning though because it's these types of articles in the off-season that lay the ground work for "hot seat" status at the beginning of the next season.
Is Heupel there or did the changes he's made get him another year or two from being on the "hot seat"?

Crazy though to look at that list and of the 31 teams listed, like 11 or 12 are getting a new HC and another 8 or 10 could be said to have coaches already on the "hot seat".

It’s whatever. Beat Georgia and OU and probably you also beat Vandy. Defensive side of the ball had completely checked out by the last game and the bowl game. We probably get our teeth kicked in if we had made playoffs. This team was close until they said piss on it.

I think one of Heupel's biggest games next year may be Auburn in Neyland. Lose that to Golesh and Banks, and his seat may be on fire

Everyone on here is using the phrase "epic failure", yet that phrase is never once uttered in that article, much less in the part about Tennessee. If you're going to a baby about wording, at least cry about the actual words that were used. The section Tennessee was listed under was "A post-2024 funk", which was about as accurate of a description as there could be.

ESPN predicts we’ll have a down year (likely 8-5)…… we go 8-5….. “epic failure” 🤔
I predicted 6-6.

We lost four o-line starters, DB's always seem to struggle, we have Cap'n Shanks kicking, plus we had no real QB in June.

Can't believe those misfits both drained the swamp and won eight games.

That was a spot-on, concise summary of 2025.
Yep…no one expected our defense to go from really good to fully sucks….our offense did struggle moving the ball consistently against good teams but that’s been an Achilles heel for Heupel’s offenses….of course everyone has a tough time against really good Ds but we just seem to self inflict drive killers (drops and bad calls/choices)…
