Now not playing Gmac in the bowl game hurts. We could have had a barometer for judgement in a game that “ did not count”.
We did not even attenpt a deep ball all game and even Aguilar said postgame “ we did not want to press with the Illinois safety play”, hence his clean sheets.

What would it have hurt to play him a series or a half??

At that point of the season, not much. Ever kept a secret, try it. He may have been injured. If you are going to premier a QB do it with the starters including the one's in the portal.

Everybody has stated he they wanted a GMAC reveal during the season.
No need to show case plus Coach had a 2nd string guy, who probably needed some confidence and and experience. Plus, JA's status was not known or is not known at the moment.

Everybody that wanted a reveal to satisfy their needs. The fanbase who is not coaching a team wants it to satisfy their needs. Coach probably didn't and knows better.
Sorry but, you are going to have to trust the coach's.

Funny thing regarding this conversation. I read one Tenn Vol blog daily and the post from the insider on the site the day of the Music City Bowl mentioned the real storyline was going to be “if Tennessee could get up by enough points by halftime to allow George MacIntyre to play the second half”.
Enough points by halftime lol

He was the 3rd team QB all year long. Could we please stop pretending there wasn't a reason?
Even if he sucked you still have to get him some reps. Everyone on the planet knew Merk was not the answer. Maybe the coaches also felt like GMac isn't the answer? Doesn't matter. You have to give reps to any quarterback who has the slightest chance of helping you down the line.

Probably like TN and other schools didn't broadcast their O&W game last year. Show off your QB talent and wind up some school gets in their ear trying to get them there.

No offense, but a series here and there won't do much. What I question is why the staff went to Merk all year long when Aguilar came out. Surely by that time, the staff had to know Merk wasn't going to make it here. They should have identified GMac as the successor and given him entire half's in those buy games.

If the idea was to preserve a RS in this portal world, the only thing that makes sense is GMac and his family wanted to preserve it. Still could have played him in up to 4 games tho. So now here we stand...totally inexperienced and unable to buy a veteran for next year. This is why people question Heupel at times....okay...a lot.

Actually, the game did count.

It sounds like he's just simply not good enough to start here anytime soon and that's why they're scouring the portal for a better option. They're not holding him out as a secret weapon or anything...

Literally nobody does that. They try to win the game that's in front of them and evaluate their players on an ongoing basis. Occasionally, maybe a QB gets reps in an effort to keep him around, but a series here and there doesn't really change the dynamic vs. all the hours they see him on the practice field. Chances are, he is like a lot of Freshmen and just not physically ready.

You know the coaches that make millions of dollars see these kids every day in practice, just saying.. There is a reason they pursued a experienced QB. Looks like everyone is going to get their wish the way it's turned out. Tennessee may be 2025 UF next year. The schedule is brutal and no QB that has played any meaningful football.

Definitely not an ideal situation, but it actually scares me less than the situation last year when we had a clear starter that bolted in April.

He'll get a lot of time with them anyway. That's about as positive as I can spin that.. Gmac just doesn't look physical ready for the SEC.. Brandon may play early out of necessity.

GMac has plenty of talent, he has one year in the system, and from reports, has a pretty high football IQ. We've seen CJH take guys with decent talent and make them into good QB's. I'm still on board with getting a mid-guy from the portal and developing GMac. Spend the money around him.

A lot of it is just because he's so tall, but man he looks skinny on the field. Hopefully he can gain 20 lbs just for self preservation and be a factor.

If he can throw a accurate deep pass he may be alright. Going to go through the usual growing pains.. He needs to hit the buffet and the weight room this off-season..

Agree. Short guy playing bb told me one time when no one could block his shot. I have been short playing basketball all my life.
Maybe same with Mac he has always been skinny playing. I bet he isn't looking at his weight as an issue.
