Just as a thought exercise, if GMac had signed out of high school with Maryland, California, or some school where he would have started last year as a freshman, how excited would you be if we acquired him in the portal this December?

Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele played at Cal as a true freshman (3117 yds, 17TD, 9 INT). Malik Washington started at Maryland (2963 yds, 17TD, 9 INT). There are other freshman who played, of course. Those stat lines are not particularly special in modern offenses, but it does give you an idea of what he might have produced at a school that played him last year. If he transferred here having thrown for 3,000 yards and twenty TDs, would you be more excited signing this four star QB with what are relatively middle of the road stats than you are having him assume the role after a developmental year as backup? What level of performance would make you more excited? Simply showing that he is big enough to survive a football season? I’ll hang up and listen to your answers.

Coach Heupel understands this.

While fans repeat over a over "WE NEED A 3RD QB". Why not 4 or 5 QBs?? They don't know lol.
Heupel only went after QBs with multiple years in college and at least one season as a fulltime starter and performed well.
He wasn't going to sign a 5'10 165 ,lbs QB just because he complete,d 50 passes consecutively.
We have a 3rd QB already.

HOWEVER, A GMAC actually starting a full-season as a true freshman is much better than the current GMAC. Playing is how you develop.

5’11” 180 lbs. even though against lesser talent. He was also surrounded by lesser talent. And 38 TD’s and 2 int’s. I would be happy with half that against better competition. But that seems irrelevant now.

You have way too much spare time if this is what you can dream up to "IF" about.

Many Qb start as true freshman with no experience of playing college ball or in a new system, they gain experience in both as the games are played.
What we have is a sophomore with 1 year in the system but no playing experience other than 3rd team reps, that needs to add another 10-15 lbs.
GMAC looked really comfortable playing in his high school videos, hopefully he reaches that level with the Vols.

The issue with this theory is that he was 3rd string behind Merk who likely was never going to start here. If the plan was to go all in for what we deemed as a top qb or pivot to GMac as qb1, it makes no sense that he would be 3rd string. It makes no sense that he wasn't the starter in the bowl game. I really like Heupel as a coach, but this seems to be a very big mistake and a risky gamble to take when his job depends on winning. I think even competing for a playoff spot would take a monumental coaching performance.

He was 3rd string bc he hadn’t yet earned QB2. We still do that, right? Earn a job instead of being given a job or nah?

He wasn’t the starter in the bowl game bc he hasn’t yet earned QB1.

Vandy beat us last year with a guy who was shorter than 5'11'' . If he can make the plays, he can win the games.
