Back of the football card

Thomas stands in at 6-foot-5 and weighs 250 pounds. He’s from Mobile, Ala. and attended the hometown program South Alabama for his first three collegiate seasons, redshirting in 2023. Throughout his career, Thomas has played in 26 games with five receptions for 39 yards. Mainly used for his physicality in the lineup, Thomas logged 402 total snaps last fall and 282 in 2024.
“After talking to the coach and staff, I felt like Tennessee would be the best choice to develop me and to get on the field and get quality playing time,” the commit said to Volquest after making the call. “Develop me as a player in all aspects of tight end – in the run game, in the past game, past pro. I feel like Tennessee would be the best at developing me.”

How this helps Tennessee

Tennessee all of a sudden had a need for a tight end with Jack Van Dorselaer hitting the portal. He was used primarily in 12-personnel (which features two tight ends) and found the field early due to his physicality. With Van Dorselaer not in the picture moving forward, Thomas is another option to reinforce returners Ethan Davis, DaSaahn Brame and Cole Harrison.

Honestly this is the type of dude they need to recruit for TEs.

Because we don’t have a clue how to use them enough in the throw game. We’re very effective at using them in run and pass blocking. Spacing and misdirection too. But crap at schematically feeding them the football.

Brame better get the ball this year. Oregon would have killed it with this kid. He can always convince his GF to transfer with him somewhere.
Need to make him a big time priority. 35-40 catches kind of priority!

It’s been a whirlwind past few hours for Thomas as Tennessee came on strong in the end.

“After talking to the coach and staff, I felt like Tennessee would be the best choice to develop me and to get on the field and get quality playing time,” the commit said.

“Develop me as a player in all aspects of tight end – in the run game, in the past game, past pro. I feel like Tennessee would be the best at developing me.”

Thomas was at Florida shortly after the dead period was lifted and took part in plenty of virtual interviews and conversations with Tennessee on Friday.

“Coach knows ball,” Thomas said on his new position coach, Alec Abeln. “From the meeting we had, I can tell he’s passionate about developing tight ends. He’s passionate about what he does and he knows what he’s talking about.”

Tennessee offensive coordinator Joey Halzle was able to go and visit Thomas in person yesterday to help close the deal as well.
“He came and just talked about how they used the tight ends,” the athlete said. “What stood out to me was how much they use them in space and all that and how they get them involved in the offense. That’s what sold me to pick Tennessee.”

Even though Thomas was not able to visit Tennessee in person, the connection he made with the staff in a short amount of time was strong.

“That just goes to show that the people – it’s more about the people,” the tight end continued. “The people I’ve met over the phone and how I feel like how they can develop me. Resources and are great and all that, but at the same time, I feel like the coach and staff and the people I’ve talked to made me decide on Tennessee.”

So, it’s early in the relationship building process for Thomas and Tennessee, but there’s enough there to have him sold on the Vols and how he can help the team in 2026. There’s a lot of excitement there from both parties involved.

“I know it’s a historically great program and a competitive program,” Thomas concluded. “I’m honored to be able to fight with them and compete and I’m ready to get to work.”

Tennessee will now have five scholarship tight ends for 2026.

They did a great job, we just had a TE who wanted to play tip drill. They really attacked the two deep look by sending the TE into the soft spot in the zone. But, after your TE tips it in the air for an interception for the umpteenth time, you shut that down.
