Back of the football card

Gordon (5-10, 200) from Toccoa, Georgia played well his freshman season, registering 516 yards on 128 carries with five touchdowns. Gordon also had 13 catches for 93 yards and a touchdown on the year. The rookie’s best day for the Green Wave was a 15-carry, 78-yard and three-touchdown performance against Tulsa. The tailback averaged four yards a carry and logged 418 snaps on the year with a season-high 49 against East Carolina. Gordon’s Pro football focus grade in 2025 was 72.7.

How this helps Tennessee

Heupel’s first four years at Tennessee saw his offense accumulate over 2,500 rushing yards each season. Even in 2025, Heupel’s lowest rushing total in Knoxville, the Vols ran for 2,098 yards in the regular season and finished with 2,255 yards after the bowl game. The total was good enough for eighth in the conference. DeSean Bishop, a former walk-on from Knoxville, became the 21st Volunteer to secure the 1,000-yard marker in a season in the loss to Illinois in the Music City.

It’s also worth noting that Bishop’s 1,076 yards ranks fourth in the league and his 16 rushing scores is tied for second. Clearly, Bishop is going to be a part of the picture moving forward, having a stellar individual season, but Tennessee could still use some help running the football and should receive it with Gordon.
In the four regular season nonconference wins over Syracuse, ETSU, UAB and New Mexico State, the Vols crushed it on the ground for 934 yards. That’s 44.5 percent of the regular season’s total of 2,098 yards. Tennessee averaged 145.5 yards in eight conference games this season. That includes dominant efforts of 264 yards vs. Arkansas and 248 yards against Florida.

Tennessee was held under 100 yards in two league games – 63 yards vs. Oklahoma and 83 yards vs. Vanderbilt – and failed to reach 150 yards in any other conference game outside of the two dominant efforts mentioned above.

Tennessee is poised to pick up the pace in the backfield with another experienced tailback to throw into the mix with Bishop, rising sophomore Daune Morris and rising redshirt-freshman Justin Baker.

“I just wrapped it up,” Gordon said. “I just committed. I’m here in Knoxville, you know? I’ll be here this fall.”

So what about the visit to Rocky Top stood out and made him want to run the rock in Orange?

“Everything,” Gordon said. “The campus here is nice. The people here are great. Amazing hospitality. Facilities are nice. Coaches are everything you’d want in a coach. It’s just the place to be in Knoxville.”

So why Tennessee?

“It’s all the resources you could need as a student athlete — great people,” Gordon said. “And when you know, you know, and I just felt like I know and it felt like home.”

Tennessee running backs coach De’Rail Sims has been looking to add to his room this cycle. Gordon like what he found in Sims.
“Coach Sims, he’s an upfront dude,” Gordon said. “He’s going to tell you how it is — no sugarcoating. And he knows the game.”
He and his family also really loved meeting and talking with Josh Heupel.

“He’s a great guy,” Gordon said. “Cares about his players. He’s going to tell you how it is, also. He was great playing the game, and now he’s back coaching the game and just having amazing success in the past few years in his offense.”

Gordon ran for 516 yards and scored five touchdowns last season for Tulane.

“I feel like I bring (pass) catching, running, blocking,” Gordon said. “I feel like I’m an all-down type of back, and I’m willing to lay it on the line for my quarterback.

“They say that I’ll fit right in. Come in, work, of course. Come in, work, keep my head down, have a little 1-2 punch with Bishop and get this thing back to the playoffs.”

So when did he know it was the Vols?

“I kind of, like, thought about it and prayed about on the way up, once I planned it. And then, now that I got here, I’m pretty much done with the visit now. I made my decision.”

I like the signing and I like his upside. We've proven we don't need elite blue chip talent to have success in the run game so even if the guy isn't a projected NFL back (he may be, I don't know) then at least we can feel good about our rotation and know with Bishop, Gordon Baker, and Morris we have a talented and young backfield.

Good depth piece added to Running back room. Knowing what it will cost us for DGG next year we weren't going to spend alot on Running back. In CHRIST Alone
