Metcalf is a 5-foot-10, 200 pound defensive back from Pinson, Alabama. The Metcalf’s are cousins to current NFL receiver D.K. Metcalf.

Tevis played in two games last season for Michigan on defense logging 17 snaps. On special teams, the sophomore played in 12 games logging 60 snaps. He’s expected to have a big role for the Vols in the kicking game. Like his brother, Tevis signed with Arkansas out of high school and the two transferred to Michigan for the 2025 season. The younger Metcalf registered three tackles and one forced fumble for the Wolverines in 2025 as a safety and STAR.

How this helps Tennessee

It’s basically a complete renovation of the Tennessee secondary moving forward.

The Vols lost starting safety Andre Turrentine to graduation, as well as STAR Jalen McMurray. Once Boo Carter was dismissed from the team midway through the season, the Vols didn’t have much depth at STAR. Edrees Farooq (740 snaps) played nearly every snap at safety this season but reserves Kaleb Beasley (301 snaps) and Sidney Walton (104 snaps) never made a true rotation in the backend at safety.

Tennessee is also losing corners Jermod McCoy and Colton Hood to the NFL and Rickey Gibson and Kaleb Beasley entered the transfer portal.

The Vols needed help in the secondary and Metcalf’s addition is the fifth in the defensive backfield for the Vols thus far in portal season. Tennessee has landed defensive back commits from Kansas State defensive back Qua Moss (STAR), Auburn cornerback Kayin Lee, Penn State safety Dejuan Lane, Michigan safety TJ Metcalf and now younger brother Tevis from Michigan as well.

Still have Walton, Lewis, and Poteat on the roster. Looks like Knowles is all set in the Secondary. Would be nice to add another wide body in the middle. There are several +300lb Polynesian DTs in the portal. Take a flyer on one and bring him in, hard to go wrong with those guys.

Great depth player with potential and multiple years of availability. Say what you will, but the players we lost who might have been rated higher, never took advantage of the playing time that was there. With the right coaching, the younger Metcalf may surprise.

There's no such thing as multiple years or potential in the portal era. Either you bring it in year 1 or the player will be gone (actually regardless if successful year 1 as they'll test the portal waters for more money). Too much emphasis is being put on underclassmen. Go get the most experienced player possible because there is no guarantee that whoever you pick up will be there the following year.
