CFP staying at 12 teams in 2026

That’s a damn shame. We are at such a breaking point with NIL, playoffs, conference realignment, and everything else. I’m not sure what the right answer is, but I believe we have to make student-athletes employees at this point and get a collective bargaining going.

What a mess.

I only care because bowl games outside of the CFP are at an all time low in terms of value and respect. Too many don't give a damn about the experience, swag, or memories you make anymore when you go to these games. It's CFP or bust.

You can thank the Big 10 & Tony Pettitti for this one.
They blocked the 16-team playoff.
Took their ball & went home.
Older link but a good explanation.

I think the biggest culprit is Sankey. He willingly gave up any leverage he had to go to 16. He has given Pettiti full control of college football. Some wanted a Czar, well they got one in Pettiti.

So my question is:
Does the G5 get an autobid? That has been a farce.
With Notre Dame getting an autobid if they are in the top 12, does SoS come into play at all? They'll be ranked top 12 to start, and go through their easy self made schedule to remain in the top 12. Also a farce.
Will the B10 play a nine conference game schedule? Will they force more matchups between the top teams of their conference, or will it still be one or two tough games a year in their conference schedule?

12 team playoff is ok for right now, but if and only if the entry measurements is correct and the side deals like ND is voided.
Humans with Bias' towards a conference or team have got to be eliminated.
SOS has got to be a major consideration
Qualified committee members with understanding and knowledge.
For example, Team A plays 5 ranked teams 3-2. Team B plays 2 ranked teams and goes 1-1. Which team gets in?

I think 8. Does anyone realistically believe that 16 teams have the strength to win it all? 8, maybe. 16, never.

The money will drive it to 16, of course, and that's what matters.
I agree with you generally, but Miami barely getting in and making it to the championship game does make the case for a larger field.

That will ultimately end the association with the schools. It won't be possible to comply with Title IX. Vols, Inc. breaks away from UT, maybe rents out Neyland Stadium but they are the Richmond Braves. Congress passing an anti-trust exemption is the only college sports survives in a recognizable form.

Miami made it to the title game as the 10th seed. They absolutely deserved to be there as well. 16 is the right number imo. Sure, those 1v16 and 2v15 games probably aren't going to be great, but that's exactly why you put yourself in the position to be in the top 4.

4 teams is the ideal number. Thank goodness somebody wasn’t a total idiot. I think eventually the idiots do win and it’ll be 16. Then people will think all the problems of too many teams can be solved by going to 32. Careful what you wish for.

I don't think Miami beats Ohio State nor Ole Miss most years. Yes, the D was outstanding in those games but I see it as more of a fluke that Ole Miss was in turmoil.

But I'll grant flukes make a case for 16.

Think about it a 10th seed and a 7th seed have both played for a CFP NC.
ND was a 7th seed and no way they should been that high based on SOS and losing to N. Illinois at home.

No Conference but the committee must have used Geology to rank them so that they played Indiana.

This year it appears ND's philosophy was no CFP, then, no Bowl. What a joke not playing in a bowl against a good team. Just wanted to keep others guessing about without them validating they did not deserve to be in the CFP.

Total BS

Yep, but as long as some company willing to dish 2-4 million to sponsor, you're gonna have them. Best not to watch.

Big Ten has been fighting the correct progress in college football for 60 years

You hit the nail on the head.
I wish Sankey had the balls to go out & tell the NCAA that we're going back to 8 SEC games since they left the CFP at 12 teams.
Petitti played Sankey like a fiddle, ensuring that no matter what, the SEC would put fewer teams in the playoff after decimating one another with the damn 9 game SEC league schedule PLUS the SEC title game.

Think about it,. the top 2 SEC teams will have played TEN league games before the CFP bracket is even seeded.

Total BS.

Move back to 8 SEC games.

Tell Petitti to suck it.

SEC moving to 9 conference games isn't that big of a deal, when the playoff does move to 16 teams it will have zero effect
