D1 Baseball doesn't think the 2026 BaseVols team will get it done in 2026. They picked UT finishing 7th in the SEC and pointed to “inexperienced roster and a new coaching staff”. The article is behind a paywall but I’m linking it regardless. They picked LSU to win the SEC followed by TX, MSU, Ark, Auburn, FL, and UT. Despite being picked 7th in the SEC, D1 has TN ranked 14th overall.

Predicted Order of Finish

1. LSU
2. Texas
3. Mississippi State
4. Arkansas
5. Auburn
6. Florida
7. Tennessee

Sounds like everyone is cautious because of how A&M went last year.

So much of the SEC schedule is determined by the 5 teams you don’t play-( Texas, Miss.State, Arkansas, all very favorable)
5 teams you play at home
5 teams you play on road
Who you play early
Who you play late
Consecutive weeks on road or home

Tennessee has one of 3 toughest SEC schedule this year

Even thought the D1 guys are really connected with college baseball, there is obviously some concern that Tony V and his enormous personality plus Frank and his wizardry, were the main reason for success the last few years. It's understandable that there will be skepticism all around. I wouldn't call it a slight to Elander and the rest of the staff, but it is going to be a great thing for Josh to point out to the team. It's a "show me" situation. So....show 'em.

I guess this is what happens when you lose who was arguably the best college baseball coach in the country
Agreed. Not only Vitello, but BaseVols lost Frank Anderson, Luke Bonfield, Sean McCann, and Quentin Eberhardt as well. All but Bonfield joined Vitello with the Giants. Bonfield left in the Summer for Pitt. All were HUGE losses to the coaching and support staff, and were arguably top 5 in their respective crafts. McCann and Bonfield were ridiculously underrated.

I think "show me" is a good way to put it.

It's also a safe pick. No embarrassment if we do better or worse.

It won't matter.

This team is stacked and stacked again. Good luck.

7th is a bit harsh but understandable. I would have picked us 5th. I’m not that high on Florida or Miss State. First year for O’Conner at MSU and even though he’s one heck of a coach, I would be shocked if he finished Top 3 in his first year there.

I think Tennessee baseball is Miami football of the 80s.

New blood program. Had never won a NC before Vitello/Schnellenberger arrived. Even though each program had some intermittent minor success in the past, that Coach invigorated the program and unlocked the uber success. Rest of the country hates them, mainly due to their success and arrogance. Vitello/Schnellenberger move on. Miami football kept rolling with Johnson, Erickson, and later, Davis/Coker.

As great as Vitello is, I think we keep it going. Like Miami, the beast has been unlocked and let out of the cage. We will continue to bring in talent (this roster is better than last year's, IMO). And we are replacing great coaches with great coaches.
