Signing day used to be such an event. I'll never forget signing day 2002. Tennessee had just whiffed on the 2001 national title shot, but then Fulmer and friends rolled in with a monster class unlike any Tennessee's ever recruited since - on paper anyway. Five star after five star. Riggs, Harrell, Banks, Jefferies, Benedict, Kirkland, Wade. Hell, then they even got some dude named J.T. Mapu to sign. "What!?" That one was a shocker. It felt like Tennessee was loading up. All of us in the VolQuest chat/IRC channel were going nuts all day. I did this goofy thing thing where I "rang the recruiting bell" in chat every time we signed a big name - and we were ringing that damn bell over and over and over.

People were going crazy for weeks after that. It felt like UT would be in the title chase for years to come. Ah. The folly of youth.
