As for off-season workouts, they are on and they are serious. There’s not a bunch of music playing and there’s not much messing around with the new staff.
The buzz word continues to be accountability.
I would describe it as work,” running back DeSean Bishop said of strength coach Derek Owings. “It’s a lot different than last year.”
Multiple players have told us, “it’s hard and it was needed. This is going to help us.”

So, we’re back out of the Butch Jones era, once again? Lol
Little different leadership. Two problems. Butch aids with players unhappy with his S&C. The bigger problem is when Jones fired him, the AD provided him no money to hire a replacement, so he had to hire from within.

In this case, UT found the best and paid Him more than any other Strength Coach in the country.

What a moron! Dave Lawson was a great S&C coach here! Our guys played tough and nasty in his program! Once he was fired, our team's toughness fell off a cliff and you could immediately tell it on the field! I saw it in the very first game against Appy State. They were a way more physical team than we were and outplayed us. They should have won that game to be honest.

I don’t know the whole story, but heard the players bowed up against Lawson. Not sure how great he is as he’s at ETSU, but the team did decline. As
stated, Butch was told “sorry,” you aren’t getting any money as Lawson had a decent buyout. We just weren’t serious as a program. Butch may have had cause, but was hamstrung by the AD. The AD may have had good reason. Too many unknowns.

What we just spent on a S&C tells me Danny White, love him or hate him, is willing to open the check book for Heupel. Of course, I think this is self preservation, as Heupel’s path will ultimately determine Danny’s.

AGREE - people here fail to realize that the AD / HFC relationship at UT has always been 100% symbiotic.
Yes, the AD hires and is ultimately responsible for the HFC (cash cow coach), but the HFC fails to win (make money) and the AD won't last long.

It remains to be seen if that is truly the case under Plowman, but all signs seem to indicate that if Heupel doesn't continue on the upward trajectory and White doesn't give him the tools to make it possible, DW is looking for a new job.
Things like paying the money for S&C show on Danny's part that he's giving Josh the tools...so if it stalls out, it's on Josh and not Danny.

Thanks for the post. This matters more than the starting QB imo. Without strength and conditioning you have zero chance to win a tough game.
Now maybe we can get rid of the fake injury after extra point attempts because our guys will be ready to take the field instead of gasping for air on the sidelines

Yeah, I'm sure a guy that had to drop down to ETSU was just an A+ coach...Team was consistently weak up front under Butch and very injury prone. Their bodies were getting steamrolled. Now, Lawson may have been better than the next guy (not even sure who that was. We didn't hire Rock Gullickson for 9 more months after Lawson got fired). I'll give you that.

As I said before, I'm only speaking of WHEN he was here, not where he's been since. I cant speak to his success today, but in the two years Lawson was our S&C coach, our teams were tough and in shape! And the "consistently weak up front" issue with Jones' teams you speak of, happened the 3 years AFTER Lawson was fired. I dont even understand what you're arguing about.

He was there for all of Butch's first three years. We were not good up front.

It was never strategic imo…more defiance at the blatantly fake nonsense unchecked from other teams when it really mattered.
