Has anybody been arrested or charged? Just so happened we went down I-40 on the way back from the mountains the day before. Traffic was bumper to bumper going 80 MPH with idiots tail gating and cutting in and out of lanes. Surprised a fatal accident doesn't happen every day. And how can anyone in an over-sized pick-up not see traffic was stopping in front of him..

Wonderful news on the Go Fund me. Also great discussion on the need for life insurance if you are married with kids. If you are reasonably healthy there is no excuse for not having coverage as term insurance is surprisingly inexpensive.

Be sure and shop around, it is amazing the difference in rates between companies, Term is the easiest product to compare,; years of coverage, amount and premium are all you need to know. State Farm and Farm Bureau are excellent companies for Homeowners and Auto insurance but dont just call them and buy a life policy without checking around. If you are a smoker once you see the difference in smoker and non smoker rates this would be a good time to quit.

Question for any tax attorneys. Are the proceeds from Go Fund me accounts taxable?

Income tax does not apply to gifts. Gift tax may apply to gifts over the annual exclusion amount, currently $19,000 per donor to each individual donee.

Not taxable for Rucker's family.

Donations made to the GFM are not tax deductible for individuals.

Absolutely recommend term insurance if you got a family. It's super cheap if you are in 20-40s and healthy...

Assuming Rucker wasnt at fault for the accident; there could be a legal claim elsewhere. If he was at fault, his family needs to take steps to protect the GFM proceeds if someone else was seriously injured.

Under Tennessee's modified comparative negligence laws, even if Rucker were found to be partially responsible for the accident in some way, as long as it was below 50% then a decent attorney is going to hit the insurance policies of every other driver involved in the accident as contributing to his death.

He had a stroke a few years ago. Based on that, I wonder how hard it would have been for him to get coverage.
No chance for an individual policy. I'm surprised he didn't have a group policy through WBIR. Group policies are usually guaranteed issue if your employer has enough employees.

It did sound like grievously terrible driving was the cause. Not that there was tailgating. If the killer had been tailgating Rucker, he would have been perfectly safe. FWIW.

That $25K limit won’t go far though. Maybe you have something if you can stack some policies and have a few buying $100K+ or with an Umbrella.

He was ineligible for coverage.

The initial report said it was a 5 car pileup. The first car got rear ended by the second car and the third car rear ended it. They said it set off a “chain reaction”. The 5th vehicle is presumably the truck, and the 4th car was Rucker but it didn’t specially say that he hit anyone.

This is accurate. As a person who is the same age as Wes, who has also had a serious medical condition, it does take time to get coverage. He also switched employers in the past year, which could also have played a factor as well.

That's not at all what it sounds like. The truck apparently did not have time to stop, most likely because it was speeding and following too closely, like 90% of the bro-dozers on 40/75.
