Feel free to edit what I got! Virginia was the first southern state. VT is Appalachia as it gets. UNC would be fun with basketball and Kentucky matchups. Clemson would become more relevant. Yes Arkansas is the south but it is an odd hybrid south somewhat like we perceive west Virginia as too north "the most southern northern state" Arkansas seems "the most eastern West State"

LSUis as deep dirty southern as it gets yes but by far its own thing and not necessarily south EASTERN... Florida is its own thing too. If we make exceptions of LSU and Florida being sEc then FSU absolutely belongs. WVU would also but they are at the very top of West Virginia. If they were near Blacksburg they'd belong. Marshall therefore makes sense but no.
