Season has been a success reaching the Sweet 16 with this lineup of good kids, good attitudes, decent basketball players, but prone to lots of mistakes and breakdowns/collapses at critical stages of important games. This team is perhaps the lowest basketball IQ, worst fundamental skill sets and poorest defensive team Barnes has assembled during his tenure at Tennessee, but they do win along the way.
Gillespie committed three bonehead plays in the last 4 minutes against Virginia and the team did not score a field goal in the last 3:37 of the game, made plenty of free throws. Ament's ankle looked fine walking on the baseline turning the ball over at a critical point in the game. Ament needs lots and lots of tutelage and teaching, but im not sure there is anybody on Barnes' staff that can fill that role and help develop that type of big man skillset.
Despite these flaws, regular season collapses at home and on the road, the team is one of the last 16, team does not have the honed skills and error free play to win it all, but we knew that watching the Duke exhibition in October, happy for Rick Barnes, back on a big stage, with the solid media exposure and the ability to demonstrate what a good guy he is, even with a team that can be very hard to watch.
