Interesting watching Duke. nothing fancy about their offense. Good movement off the ball with cutting and screening and then crashing the boards. It just comes down to solid execution. Kind of the same Story on defense. Good positioning and switching and multiple shot blockers. Their big problem was keeping Fulwiley out of the paint but that is a universal problem. They stayed composed under pressure is the big thing. It was a nice coaching job.

Would Kara take the UT job if offered or is she happy staying out of Pat’s shadow?
I feel like people here have such strong feelings about it that now I have strong feelings about it. I think if she achieves a level of success at Duke like Final Fours, coming home and elevating her program would be a challenge she would accept. Or maybe this is just manifesting what I want to see in the world, but that's the beauty of being a fan with no real power.

She might have taken the job if AD White had offered her two years ago with the right amount of money and resources. I seriously doubt she would take it now. She is set at Duke they are on the rise expect she doesn't want any other job.

Now why on earth did we not hire her instead of Caldwell? And can we hire her in a couple years or has that ship sailed?
This has been discussed multiple times here. She burned her bridges here after making multiple public derogatory comments about the administration when she left her position on the board of trustees.

It looks better when you keep your best players on the floor instead of sitting them every 3 or 4 minutes.

If I remember correctly? Her dad wanted her to play bb at Duke but she wanted to play for Pat ! So coaching at Duke would be a plus . 🤔
It was Stanford, not Duke. A quick AI overview:

  • The Vow: Bill Lawson was initially strongly against his daughter playing for Tennessee, preferring she go to a school like Stanford, and he promised he would never watch her play after she signed with the Lady Vols.
  • The Turning Point: For 3 1/2 years, he did not attend her games and banned orange from his home. However, he relented toward the end of her senior year after a heartfelt, turning-point conversation with former Lady Vol teammate Ashley Robinson, who met him when the team played at George Washington.
  • At the Game: Bill Lawson did watch her play in person during the 2003 Final Four/National Championship game in the Georgia Dome, her last collegiate game.

I was for Kara to get the job over Kellie. I know she was inexperienced at coaching but I loved listening to her on TV break down games. With Tennessee name and support I had no doubt players would come here and let her grow as a coach with them. I know some say she would never come here well I don't believe that. Money is correct and NIL she would come home because she knows TN is a sleeping Giant just waiting to awaken. In CHRIST Alone

This has been discussed multiple times here. She burned her bridges here after making multiple public derogatory comments about the administration when she left her position on the board of trustees.
For the umpteenth time, this narrative is a "fan fiction" that is is completely disconnected from what actually happened. Here is the trusty ChatGP summary of the events:

In June 2020, Kara Lawson criticized the University of Tennessee for a severe lack of diversity in its athletic leadership, stating it was "behind the times" and lacked African American head coaches. As a former player and trustee, she urged officials to address the absence of diverse representation in decision-making roles, calling it "striking".
  • Key Criticisms: Lawson, a former Lady Vol and UT Trustee, noted that while the student-athlete population was diverse, the administration was not.
  • Targeted Feedback: She highlighted that not a single head coach at the institution was African American at the time of her comment.
  • Call to Action: She explicitly stated to the board, "I would encourage all members of the board, the chancellors, the president, to look at the diversity or lack thereof of the senior staffs of our athletic departments".
  • Context: She made these comments during a June 2020 UT Board of Trustees meeting amid broader nationwide discussions on racial injustice

Then UTAD Phil Fulmer stated in response:

Increasing diversity, we certainly continue to look at and work at that." Fulmer said. "Mikki Allen was here as our chief diversity officer and took an athletics director’s job at Tennessee State and did a good job. We’re working right now to fill that position in that area. We’ve called on our administrators here and minority administrators. We’re searching out ideas and goals that we will put in place as we go forward.”

The President of the UT system, Randy Body then made this statement in response:

UT System President Randy Boyd said he is committed to looking at metrics of diversity on staff, and making those numbers public.

"We have to make a concerted effort to improve diversity," Boyd said during a press conference later in the day.

The current lack of diversity is "definitely something we're conscious of and want to address," he said.

"It’s got to be a focus," Boyd said.

In 2020, Lawson was 2 years into her term and completed her appointment which ran until 2024. So, you are also dead wrong on that detail about the timing as well.

[Edit: the events related to Kara being in the running for the Lady Vol head coach job after Warlick's firing, all preceded the 2020 Board of Trustees meeting].

So, how about those on this board stop spreading this false narrative that Kara Lawson was making "derogatory" statements about UT when she was in fact, noting a documented and acknowledged statistical disparity, and she fulfilled her six year term without further incidence.

She made the statements while serving her term and continued on the board for another 2 years. When she was hired by Duke she received permission to finish out her term on the board, which she did.

edit: Mad didn’t mean to restate your message, I just realized you typed in reference to the same point.

The question is from her point of view what exactly would Tennessee offer better than what Duke would offer? I would have to think the Duke would be more desirable of a coaching position from many aspects. Obviously the SEC offers things that the ACC does not, but comparing Duke to Tennessee, objectively (not through an orange lens) I cannot see benefits from making that move, but that is coming from someone that is not a fan of either team and has a much much greater distain for Duke than I could ever have for Tennessee.
